Release Day Launch: THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING by Rachel Harris (Excerpt + Giveaway)

We are so excited to bring you the Release Day Launch of Rachel Harris' THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING! THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING is the first book in Rachel's The Fine Art of Pretending Series published by Spencer Hill Contemporary.

The Fine Art of Pretending

According to the guys at Fairfield Academy, there are two types of girls: the kind you hook up with, and the kind you're friends with. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Reed is the second type. And she hates it. With just one year left to change her rank, she devises a plan to become the first type by homecoming, and she sets her sights on the perfect date—Justin Carter, Fairfield Academy’s biggest hottie and most notorious player. With 57 days until the dance, Aly launches Operation Sex Appeal and sheds her tomboy image. The only thing left is for Justin actually to notice her. Enter best friend Brandon Taylor, the school’s second biggest hottie, and now Aly’s pretend boyfriend. With his help, elevating from “funny friend” to “tempting vixen” is only a matter of time. But when everything goes according to plan, the inevitable “break up” leaves their friendship in shambles, and Aly and Brandon with feelings they can’t explain. And the fake couple discovers pretending can sometimes cost you the one thing you never expected to want.

An exhale of breath leaves Brandon’s lips, almost like a laugh, and he scoots closer to me on the blanket. I twist my legs under myself, sitting tall as I face him. He cups my chin and tilts it toward him, drowning me in the now dark-green depths of his eyes, the cologne I gave him for his birthday filling my head. It’s woodsy and yummy and I always loved how it smelled on the store testers, but on Brandon, it’s even sexier. My eyes flutter closed, and I inhale again, this time slowly. Goose bumps prickle my arms, and my head gets fuzzy. Brandon slides his hand down the column of my neck and brings the other up, threading his fingers through the hair at my nape. His breath fans across my cheek, and everything south of my bellybutton squeezes tight. When his mouth first meets mine, it’s hesitant, questioning. But as I move my lips with his, he quickly grows bolder, coaxing them apart. Desire, pure and raw, electrifies my veins as his tongue sweeps my mouth. A whimpering sound springs from my chest, and instinctively, I wrap my arms around his neck, tugging him closer. Needing more. My teeth graze his full bottom lip, and I pull it, sucking on it gently. He moans and knots his fingers in my hair, and a thrill dances down my back. Brandon is an amazing kisser, just as I knew he would be. I have no control over my body’s reactions. I lose myself in his lips, his tongue, and his strong arms, forgetting time and space and even my surroundings—until Gabi’s snicker brings reality crashing around us, reminding me we have an audience. And that I’m kissing Brandon. We break apart, out of breath, and stare into each other’s eyes. That was unexpected.

Blog Tour: Illicit Desire by Taylor Michaels (eARC Review + Giveaway)

Raphael is everything I should run away from…

Cora Milan came to Miami to get a fresh start, away from the memories and stigma that followed her and her brother at home. When she’s mugged, Raphael Ortiz rescues her. He’s sexy, successful, and dangerous—Miami’s most eligible bachelor and it’s most elusive. A cartel lord who lives on the wrong side of the law, with only a veneer of respectability. He is the exact opposite of a clean slate, and he makes no apologies for wanting her.

When Raphael forces his way into her life, Cora knows she should run. But the attraction between them is undeniable, and Raphael is a man accustomed to getting what he wants. The more she loses herself in him, the deeper she is drawn into Raphael’s criminal world.

But when her past, and his present collide, both of them will be left grasping for the only thing that can save them from the darkness around them—each other.

My review:

This is a fast paced book full of sexy times and action. When Raphael first sees Cora on the steps of his building, he cant take his eyes of her and then she gets mugged and he takes matters into his own hands. It is known that he is the leader of a cartel but Cora doesnt know that in the beginning so she decides to give him a chance since she is attracted to him. From there there will be problems on their way, blasts from the past or enemy cartels.. What will Cora endure to stay at Raphael s side and what will be too much?

I liked this book, I liked all of Taylor Michaels book she wrote as Nazarea Andrews and I was excited to read her first adult book. My only complaint is that it was too short. I liked the characters, the writing, the storyline.. It all ends abruptly so I am looking forward to the sequel.

My Review:

This series is the biggest surprise of the year for me. Sure, when I signed up for the blog tour I expected it to be entertaining, but this was amazing, a true adventure full of humor, emotions, action and secrets.

In the first book Robin, or Rubina since that is her real name, found out her entire life was a lie. When her father ended up in the hospital, she found out that they are in massive debt so she breaks him out and goes to the one place she knows of where they could be safe and there will be no questions asked. In Turtle Shores she finds herself, she falls in love and bonds with people who become her extended family. She begins a criminal career with Creek to care for all those people. She also finds out her mother is alive along with a heart-shaped ruby wich she thinks is just a stone, expensive but ordinary. She and Creek, the boy she loves, decide at the end of the first book to go to Venice and find Robin s mother so she can finally have closure.

Stone of Thieves finds them on a plane to Italy where Robin begins to understand that the ruby is not an ordinary stone, it has some sort of powers. From there the story turns into a big adventure for her and Creek, wandering the streets of Venice, hiding from someone trying to kill them all while searching for Robin s mother.

It is unusual for me to like this type of stories so that was why I was so surprised I loved this one. Robin is hilarious, she does whatever it takes to help others, she loves Creek with all her heart and she is hilarious. Creek is this misterious guy with a dark past, yet a caring heart and a smart head on his shoulders. Him and Robin are a great couple, they both mellow each other and there is strong chemistry between them. Some of my favorite moments between them are when they are just lying down and looking at the stars.

The writing is beautiful, simple yet captivating and the world bulding is well done. I love the gipsy world and I hope it gets more explored in the next book. This book is full of amazing and interesting characters, it is a real adventure story for all generations and I srongly recommend it.

Waiting on Wednesday (69)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming  releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This is my choice for this week:

Talon (Talon #1)
by Julie Kagawa

Expected publication: October 28th 2014 by Harlequin Teen

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

I have read almost all of Julie Kagawa books, she is one of my favorite authors so I really look forward to this one. Plus, dragons intrigue me and this could be a perfect Halloween read.

What is your WoW choice for this week?
Leave me a link in the comments.

SWM RDL Banner
We are so pleased to bring you the Release Day Launch for Jennifer L. Armentrout's STAY WITH ME! STAY WITH ME is a New Adult contemporary romance being published by Avon (William Morrow), an imprint of HarperCollins, and is a part of Jennifer’s With You Saga!

  Stay With Me Cover

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand. “Why?” I asked. There was a beat. “Why what?” Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say. A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here. But then he moved. Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing. “What are you doing?” I asked. “Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.” “But—” “You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked. “You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out. His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.” I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place. “You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed. Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me. Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe? “Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter. “Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.” He chuckled. I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years. I felt cared for . . . cherished. Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

  Stay With Me Teaser 2

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You and Be with Me comes a daring tale that pushes boundaries . . . At 21, Calla hasn't done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should. She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends. But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she’d left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming. Sexy and intense, Jaxis in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn't give them her mom.

Heart to Heart Mondays (4): The Redeemable, The Worst and the Terrible - Villains in books

Who doesnt love a good villain? In my opinion, the villains are usually who make the story more interesting, they bring action and surprises and they make the heroes look good.

In my many years of reading there were many bad guys I encountered in books but some stayed with me. There are those who started the series as antagonistic characters who ended up being the main characters HEA. Those who redeem themselves throughout the book or those who were simply misunderstood or just didnt know better. But some are simply pure evil, on a path of destruction and blood, a force that our favorite heroes and heroines fight to survive or to make the world a better place.

Villains often dont know they are in the wrong, in their minds they are fighting for what they believe in, to them the end justifies the means and to "bad guys" what they are doing is not wrong. Sometimes, villains in books just want to play God, with no visible motivation, they simply love being the big bad and enjoy it.

Whatever their impulses, I love a good villain, especially if the villain has a sob story or is especially charming, I think we can agree that almost everyone loves a good villain. Here are some of my favorite:

From The Hollows series by Kim Harrison

Trent Kalamack starts the series as a cocky murderous businessman and drug lord. He locks Rachel in a cage when she was turned into a mink, forced her into rat battles and simply just been on her back through half of the series. But when we find out why he was doing everything and all he has done FOR Rachel, when we see his softer side and when he and Rachel start getting closer in Pale demon then he goes from villain to love interest.

Algaliarept is a demon that attacks Rachel than antagonizes her for a long time. But he then becomes her teacher and her friend, a simply misguided person who had a painful past.

Ku Sox is a demon who nearly destroyed a lot of people and if Rachel hadnt stopped him, who knows when he would have had enough of bloodshed. One of the worst book villains in my opinion.

From The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

Valentine Morgenstern  is a bad dude with a God complex who is willing to destroy everyone on his path, including his daughter and son.

Jonathan Morgenstern (Sebastian) is Valentine s son and Clary s brother who never had a chance to be who he was supposed to be since his father poisoned him with demon blood before he was born. His plan to wipe out Shadowhunters and a sick obsession with his sister were the focus of the last three books in the series. In the end, we see a glimpse of who he might have been if his father wasnt a sick bastard.

From Love me with Lies trilogy by Tarryn Fisher

Leah Smith is the woman who has schemed, lied and is simply obnoxious, all just so she could keep Caleb Drake for herself and away from Olivia. She is a terrible person, incapable of true love, who was jealous of her own baby and who has practicaly never told the truth when it mattered.

From Shatter me series by Tahereh Mafi

Aaron Warner Anderson is the son of a leader of the Reestablishment, who at first we see as cruel and obsessed with Juliette, without compassion and a lap dog for his father. But through the series we see that Warner was a beautiful soul forced by circumstances to survive and that he never did in fact made Juliette do horrible things. The true villain of the story is his father Paris Anderson, who tortures people and is playing with human lives.

Honorable mentions

Sarren from Blood of Eden trilogy by Julie Kagawa
Bishop from The Morganville series by Rachel Caine
King of Adarlan from Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
The Darkling from The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Avari from Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent.

Who are the villains you love to hate?
And who are the villains that made you most scared for your favorite characters?
Leave me a comment :)

Blog tour: Louder Than Words by Iris St. Clair (ARC review + Giveaway)

Louder Than Words
Release Date: 09/16/14
Swoon Romance

Disappointment has been on speed dial in Ellen Grayson's life lately. Her dad died, her mom numbs the grief with drugs and alcohol, and her so-called friends have slowly abandoned her.

Trusting a popular teacher with her troubles should have been safe and should NOT have led to an unwelcome seduction attempt that made her desperate to escape the final moments of Junior year. Lesson learned. Best to keep all the sordid details to herself and trust no one.

Enter Rex Jacobi, a cocky boy, recently transplanted from New York City and fellow summer camp employee. Though his quick wit and confidence draws her in, she can't let him get too close. And summer is just long enough and hot enough to keep a boy like that at arm's length.

But by the time Rex's charm wears down her resistance, it's too late. He's put Ellen on the "just friends" shelf and has shifted his romantic attentions to the impossibly annoying and perky anti-Ellen. Even worse, the teacher who tried to get her to sleep with him is still at it, preying on other girls while Ellen struggles to come to terms with what happened.

With her ability to trust as shaky as a chastity vow on prom night, Ellen must decide if she has enough remaining courage to speak up about the well-liked teacher and risk retribution, tell Rex how she really feels about him and risk heartbreak, or hold all her secrets inside. After all, it's the only safe place she knows when the only thing louder than words is the fear of being rejected.

My review:

I was pleasantly surprised by this great debut. It was written beautifully, the characters were
amazing and the story progressed smoothly and beautifully.
This is a story about a girl who knows only disappointment in life, from her mother, her peers and ultimately her teacher, when he tries to seduce her but fortunately, she manages to escape.
From there the story follows Ellen while she battles to find herself, to come to grips with what happened and what should she do.

Then, in summer camp, she meets Rex, a confident and fun guy who just moved from New York, with his own set of problems and it seems he has his eye on her. But because of Ellen s fear and shyness, they seem to be destined to remain friends so Ellen tries to figure out how to show him her true feelings in hope it is not too late.
This story is very emotional, at times frustrating when we see how Rex and Ellen dance around each other. It is also a story about fighting for yourself, growing up and taking action even though you never know what will happen next. Ellen is an amazing character, cynical and lonely yet strong and funny. The friendship between Rex and her was amazing and entertaining and I am glad there was no insta-love. I hope Ms. St. Clair writes something new soon, I will sure read it.I recommend this book to lovers of contemporary YA, this book wont disappoint.

by Nalini Singh

Exiting on the top floor of the serviced apartment complex on the waterfront, Fox went not to his own apartment but to Noah’s. He knew the band’s guitarist, who also played bass like a pro, would be in; Noah might bed a different woman—often women—every night, but he didn’t stay the night with any of them, and if he brought them back to his place, it was only for as long as it took to have sex.

Fox knew why the other man couldn’t sleep with anyone else in the room, but they never discussed it. Not like women discussed shit. They simply had each other’s backs—Noah knew if he felt himself sliding too deep into hell, he just had to reach out a hand and Fox would haul him out. Not that Fox was sure the stubborn bastard would reach out. Didn’t matter. Fox would never allow Noah’s demons to swallow him up.

He knocked lightly and wasn’t surprised when a rumpled Noah opened the door soon afterward. The other male looked like he’d rolled out of bed a second ago, his jeans hanging low on his hips, stubble on his jaw. It was an illusion—Noah rarely slept past dawn, regardless of his nighttime activities.

“You got coffee?” He walked in, leaving the door open. It was only the four of them up here, with the elevator locked to their personal keycards and service personnel instructed to come up only on request. It was one of the first things they’d realized after Schoolboy Choir’s first album went triple platinum—that if they wanted any privacy at all, they’d have to fight for it.

“Check this out.” Noah pointed to a machine that looked like it had escaped the deck of a spaceship. “Looks worse than the monstrosity you have at your place back home.”

“I know how my monstrosity works.” Fox scowled, kicking himself for not having properly checked things out before the party last night. He’d just thrown his gear inside his own apartment, the band having been at a nearby hotel till then. “Damn it, I walked right by the coffee place next door because there was a line.”

Dark gray eyes glinting, Noah found a mug, thrust it under one of the many spouts, and pushed three buttons of the thousands on the spaceship coffeemaker. Half a minute later, Fox was holding some kind of cinnamon-scented coffee so frothy he could feel his testosterone levels dropping just looking at it. “What the hell, Noah? You want me to drink this?”

“You have to drink it,” the blond male snarled. “It’s the only crap I’ve figured out how to make on this thing.”

Fox took a sip, got mostly foam. He tried again, shuddered. “Give me another mug.” When Noah handed it over, he started slotting in the shiny pod things that sat in a basket beside the coffeemaker and pushing random buttons.

Three pods later, he hit on the right combination for plain black coffee. “Clearly, I’m the brains of this outfit.”

“Gimme that.” Commandeering the coffee, Noah took a long drink, groaned. “This is coffee. Now show me what the fuck you did.”

Fox successfully made a second cup and, taking it, followed Noah out onto the balcony, both of them leaning their forearms on the balustrade. The view of the harbor was spectacular, the sparkling blue-green water busy with countless watercraft. Close to the city it was mostly commuter ferries, though there was also a tall-masted racing yacht and a boat that looked like it might be taking tourists out to see dolphins. Farther out, Fox could see sailboats and small personal fishing craft as people headed out to enjoy the brilliantly sunny—if cold—fall day.

“You had breakfast?” Noah asked as they watched a kayaker set off for one of the islands, his muscular arms and smooth pace as he rode the waves created by bigger craft making it clear he was no amateur. “I can scramble some eggs. Or we could wake David up and hold him upside down over the balcony until he agrees to feed us.”

Fox grinned at the reference to David’s superior culinary skills. “I already ate.” Finishing off his coffee, he dangled the mug from his fingers and thought of the delicious armful of woman who’d kicked him out of her car.

“You have a look that says ‘I not only got laid but had my mind blown.’” Noah froze in the act of grinning. “Shit, Fox. I saw you leave the same time as the woman Thea pointed out as her sister. If you’ve touched her, Thea will make your life a living hell, probably schedule you to appear on a Japanese game show.”
