Waiting on Wednesday (93)

Slika
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, originally created by  Breaking the Spine , that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This is my choice for this week: The Gilded Ones (Deathless #1) by   Namina Forna   The start of a bold and immersive West African-inspired, feminist fantasy series for fans of Children of Blood and Bone and Black Panther. In this world, girls are outcasts by blood and warriors by choice. Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity--and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death. Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor i

International blogger tag

Happy Monday! Instead of a Heart to Heart Mondays post, today I decided to do the International blogger tag, created by Booktuber    Daniela In Prague   and adapted for blogs by   Chelle’s Book Ramblings  . This is also a good replacement for a Heart to Heart Mondays post.  1) Where are you from and what is your native language or languages? I am from Croatia and my native language is Croatian. 2) In what languages do you read books? I read mostly in english, sometimes in croatian. 3) Are there Book Blogs, Booktubers, Bookstagrammers in your native language and if so, what is the community like? Yes, there are a lot of them, much more than when I first started blogging. Also, there was no Instagram then. That community is wonderful, I follow a lot of them on their blogs, Instagram or Facebook. I am still trying to find croatian booktubers, though.  There are links on the left sidebar to some of my favorite croatian bloggers, check them out. 4) If there is a Blogging Community in you

Heart to Heart Mondays (12): Books I would love to read but they intimidate me

Hello! Happy Monday!  I was away on vacation for two weeks and I am a big procrastinator so I did not have any scheduled posts for that time. So sorry about that. But now I am slightly recharged, a little bit rested and can devote my time to blogging again. This weeks topic is Books that intimidate me. There are a lot of books I would like to read, some I own, but I am scared to pick them up because of how many pages they are or I am afraid of having my hopes for the book dashed or the books were so hyped up or some other reason I cant think of right now.    I have on my TBR these big fantasy series, like Discworld and Wheel of time, where a TV show is coming soon so I would like to be able to get through them at some point before that. Or Dune, before the movie.    Or, in the case of IT, I am really scared of clowns but I would really like to read the book. Here are some books that intimidate me: What do you think about the books that intimidate me? Which

This is my choice for this week: Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson Korey Fields is dead. When Enchanted Jones wakes with blood on her hands and zero memory of the previous night, no one—the police and Korey’s fans included—has more questions than she does. All she really knows is that this isn't how things are supposed to be. Korey was Enchanted’s ticket to stardom. Before there was a dead body, Enchanted was an aspiring singer, struggling with her tight knit family’s recent move to the suburbs while trying to find her place as the lone Black girl in high school. But then legendary R&B artist Korey Fields spots her at an audition. And suddenly her dream of being a professional singer takes flight. Enchanted is dazzled by Korey’s luxurious life but soon her dream turns into a nightmare. Behind Korey’s charm and

Heart to Heart Mondays (11): Favorite musicians, albums and songs

Hello! Happy Monday! Like I wrote in previous Heart to Heart, today I will be talking about my musical favorites.    I always loved music, since I was very young but, of course, my music taste is vastly different today than it was then. In the 90s I was a big Britney Spears fan.. And boy bands were huge for me. I was watching and listening to MTV and Viva a lot.     That all changed when I first heard Crawling by Linkin Park on MTV in 2002. I started to search for  more bands similar to them and then branching out into ex-yu rock. In 2003. , when Bring me to life by Evanescence was first released, my love for alternative genres of music was sealed.    For years I refused to listen to any pop and similar genres, I was to narrow minded, but for the last few years, I slowly began to loosen up a little musically and listen to more pop, R & B and hip-hop. Today I listen to a lot of different genres, like: rock, symphonic metal, power metal, folk metal, gothi

Review: The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

Slika
The Underground Railroad   by    Colson Whitehead   From prize-winning, bestselling author Colson Whitehead, a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. In Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar s first stop is South Car

Heart to Heart Mondays (11): Get to know me

Happy Monday everyone! Today I decided to write more about myself since it has been many years since I first started this blog and people change.    My name is Lea, I am 30 years old and I am from Croatia. I live in Viškovo, which is a little town near the city of Rijeka and is a few miles from the Adriatic sea so I can go swimming whenever I want in the summer. I cant remember when I first fell in love with reading, somewhere early in elementary school. I remember, for punishment, instead of grounding me, my mom would take away my library card until my grades improved XD . I work as an accountant, which is admittedly boring.   I love books, movies, tv shows and music. Here are some of my favorites: 1. Favorite books   The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher          My Review U anđeoskom liku zvijeri by Viktoria Faust On the come up by Angie Thomas Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta Binti by Nnedi Okorafor Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson The Hate U Give by Angie Thoma s
