Rival (Fall Away #2) by Penelope Douglas (Review and playlist)

Summary:

From the New Adult sensation and New York Timesbestselling author of Until You

Madoc and Fallon. Two estranged teenagers playing games that push the boundaries between love and war…

She’s back.

For the two years she’s been away at boarding school, there was no word from her. Back when we lived in the same house, she used to cut me down during the day and then leave her door open for me at night.

I was stupid then, but now I’m ready to beat her at her own game…

I’m back.

Two years and I can tell he still wants me, even if he acts like he’s better than me.

But I won’t be scared away. Or pushed down. I’ll call his bluff and fight back. That’s what he wants, right? As long as I keep my guard up, he’ll never know how much he affects me….

My review:

“Sometimes I wore smiles but didn’t feel them. Sometimes I felt them and didn’t wear them. "

Bully and Until you were great reads, there we met Madoc, who on the surface is a funny, easy going guy, who only likes to party. Rival shows us that is not the case. We find out who Fallon was and is to him, what happened all those years ago and we finally meet Fallon who came back to town to get revenge for what was done to her. I love the writing and the style, it is raw and honest, plenty of cursing and easy to read, Penelope Douglas makes you love her characters and you cant help but root for them.

A lot of things happen in this book, the past is revealed and I was shocked to see what happened and I was amazed by the behaviour of the so-called adults in this book, and not in a good way. Fallons mother, if you can call her that, is truly a peace of work as is Madoc s father Jason, who redeems himself in the end. This book is full of emotions, it made me angry and sad and amused but what made me give it 4 stars instead of 5 is the amount of sex.

I have nothing against sex in books, but here it seemed that Fallon and Madoc s only good thing about their relationship is sex. They fought all the time, they constantly tried to outdo each other so I would have liked they had more talks or something that didnt include anger. I know they love each other, theirs is a passionate love that in the end overcame a lot and I love that.

I liked that we get to see Jared and Tate and how their relationship is progressing, I loved glimpses of Jax and K.C. and I am really excited to read their story in Falling away. These characters will stay a long time with me, and this NA series is really worth reading because it is different from others.

“Sometimes I wondered if the angels talked to get me to behave or to entice the devil to come out to play.”

The playlist for this book was pretty easy. Sometimes angry, sometimes sexy or soulful or simply beautiful, just like this book.

Relax, it’s only dreaming facts
Giving way to feelings
No one ever stays long
It’s over when you wake up
So I knew that it was

In the picture perfect world
We can be more than before
I said it was, I made it stronger!

Seems that I have been held, in some dreaming state
A tourist in the waking world, never quite awake
No kiss, no gentle word could wake me from this slumber
Until I realize that it was you who held me under

Felt it in my fist, in my feet, in the hollows of my eyelids
Shaking through my skull, through my spine and down through my ribs

You're on my mind always my one desire
Lets get together and build us a fire
Make me tremble make me shake
Pleasin' each other rockin' till daybreak

You drive me wild
Yeah yeah
You know you do
Uh huh
You drive me wild
You know I need you

She damned if she do
She damned if she don't
If history hang hang hangs her well
Her memory won't

There's been a perception
Of sweet hearts passing through
Some of them left no trace at all
Some left her black and blue

So tell me, have I lost it all

Have I lost my pain
Punch through a red brick wall
I don't feel a thing

But to you, it's all the same
Like a hunter only knows
What's it's prey

Whatever mine is yours
We share the blame
Just like the darkness in your mind
Is blind with shame

I don't ever wanna let you down

I don't ever wanna leave this town
'Cause after all
This city never sleeps at night

It's time to begin, isn't it?
I get a little bit bigger but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Now don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am

Flick the light, switch
Tell me your desires
Ignite the passion
Revive the old pyres

Give me your darkness
Give me your soul
Crack yourself open
This time let yourself go

Strip me
Tear me apart
Break me
Right from the start

  1. Like you, I have nothing against sex in books, far from it, but not when it seems to be the only thing that keeps the realtionship together. In that case, I tend to get very disappointed. I'd never even heard of this series before now, but I'll check it out.
