Get up offa that slump: Review Your Favorite Book Ever

Get Up Offa That Slump: A Blogging Extravaganza is a blogging challenge hosted by Rachel from Beauty and the Bookshelf. Today s challenge is to review your favorite book. I decided to talk about my favorite series of all time, The Hollows by Kim Harrison because I rarely wrote about it on the blog because I never had much coherent things to say, it would have all been unshamful gushing. There will be gushing here too, but hopefully it will end up more eloquent.

The Hollows series (also called the Rachel Morgan series) is a series of thirteen mystery novels, eight short stories, two graphic novels, and one compendium resource by Kim Harrison, published by HarperCollins Publishers, in an urban fantasy alternate history universe and set primarily in the city of Cincinnati and its suburbs. The alternate history is built upon two premises: the recent open existence of magical and supernatural species, primarily witches, vampires, andwerewolves, with the human population; and the historical investment of Cold War military spending in genetic engineering as opposed to the Space Race, which resulted in the accidental release of a genetically modified tomato in the 1960s that killed a significant portion of the human population. The series is set approximately forty years after this plague, referred to as 'The Turn' within the series. The series is told in the first-person point of view of Rachel Morgan, a detective/bounty hunter witch who works with local law enforcement agencies and faces threats both mundane and supernatural in origin. The series also focuses on Rachel's relationships with her partners, a living vampire and a pixy, as well as her personal relationships with males of different species.   (Summary from Wikipedia)

BEWARE THE SPOILERS

I started this series almost five years ago and Dead Witch walking was something very special to me and when I read the rest that were out in 2011 ( first nine books were out) I was in love. The Hollows series has a unique story, interesting characters, the world the story unravels is amazing and the flow of the story itself through all 13 books just made sense. You may think while reading that the series is just a simple paranormal romance series but I promise you, there is nothing simple about the world, the characters and the story Kim Harrison created.
From the beginning, I was on Rachel Morgans side. She was smart, spunky and a witch (at least we think so at the time) and I loved the ways she dealt with things. I loved her interactions with Ivy, her vampire roomate and partner in solving mysteries and I absolutely adored Jenks, the pixy who is also a partner in the PI bussiness and a tiny creature full of life and humor. His swering was something else, especially: "Tink's a Disney whore!" In the first book we also meet Trent Kalamack, who through the majority of the series is a bad guy but we learn that first impressions arent everything and that nothing is as it seems. I felt from the first page he appears on that he and Rachel will have something special and boy, was I right. After the death of Kisten, Rachel s vampire boyfriend ( I still am not over that), I rooted for Trent and Rachel.
This series had a lot of love interests, some amazing ↑, some awful ( Nick, blah) and some mostly ok guys that were just not for Rachel ( like Pierce and Marshall ). But the frienships are the real reason this series is awesome, Rachel would not be alive and a mostly well adjusted demon if not for Ivy, Jenks, Bis and Ceri (;(). They are all her family and even one of the big bads of some of the books, demon Al, became her true friend and teacher.
I will always love this series, it is full of surprises and unexpected moves, complex characters and relationships and the ending of the story was just what shoul have been. I cannot recommend this enough. I hope this post encourages at least one person to give this series a shot.

Oh for the sweet humpin' love of Tink!

  2. I've never heard of this series! I guess I'll need to check it out if I ever get a break in my TBR. Sometimes it gives me anxiety thinking of all the great books I'm missing. How can we ever have time for them all?
