I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there. Until one day, there was. Our world isn’t what we think. There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things. Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are. They’re very real, and they’re terrifying. I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true. There’s only one thing I know for sure. Nothing is what it seems.

Excerpt:

Sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real.
Happy birthday to me.

I close my eyes and burrow into my pillow as I try to sleep, as I try to escape this life. It’s a life I never thought I’d have, a life I most certainly don’t want. I’m still feeling sorry for myself as the blackness of sleep finally overtakes me. I don’t know what time it is when I shoot straight upward like a rocket. Something had yanked me from the oblivion of sleep, something loud and shrill scraping my window. My room is completely dark and I glanceat my clock in confusion. 3:00 a.m. As my heart pounds hard against my ribcage, I quickly scan every corner of the room. In the last few hours, dark shadows had migrated onto my pink walls, but they’re familiar, nothing out of the ordinary, although in the night, they seem twisted and scary. I remain motionless as I allow the sleep-induced fog to clear from my brain. As I sit, I feel common sense and logic slowly returning. Of course nothing had touched my window because my bedroom is on the second floor. Nothing can reach it. And there are no trees near enough to brush against it. It was just a dream. It was only a dream. I chant it silently to myself like a mantra as I consciously slow my breathing down, hoping that my racing pulse will soon follow. It was only a dream. But just as I’m calming down, I hear it again. A high-pitched shrill shriek, reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, scraping down my window. I gasp and pull my feet up to my chest, which is when I notice the temperature. I notice because I can see my breath. Timidly, I blow a puff out again, watching the way my breath turns white in the air. Holy crap. Oh my God. What the hell? The sound stops and stillness surrounds me once again, the silence so loud that it echoes in my ear. Nothing moves around me, the shadows are perfectly still as they twist across my wall. They look like mangled fingers and arms and legs, but they don’t move. My legs are weak and shaking, but I know I have to move. I have to move off my bed because it feels like something is under it. Something terrifying. With a leap, I bound across the room, my feet hitting the floor several feet away from the edge of my bed. The floor is ice cold, as though it had been covered in a blanket of snow. I’m trembling as I race to the far wall and check the thermostat. Because that’s the only explanation. I must’ve bumped it earlier, I must’ve turned the AC way down. But the luminous numbers stare at me in contradiction. 74 degrees. It must be broken. It has to be broken. My breath is coming in pants now, terrified, anxious pants. My fear isn’t logical. I know there’s nothing here. I’m the only one in this room. Or am I? The air seems to push at me from all around, something dark, something heavy, something real. Something unseen. My fingers shake, my legs tremble, and then all of a sudden, they can no longer support my weight. I go down like a pile of bricks, collapsing onto the floor. I lie still because I can’t move, because something seems to sit on my chest, holding me down. The shadows start to move, to slither across the walls, to reach and pull and dance. I struggle to focus, to see what it is. But all I can see are the numbers on the thermostat suddenly moving, rapidly counting down from 74 to 20. Twenty degrees? The air is frigid as I suck it in, as I try to pull the ice crystals into my mouth so I can breathe. All of a sudden, there’s a blackness in front of me. It hovers over me, a shapeless mass, sucking in the cells of the air, the atoms and the molecules. It’s darker than the blackness of my room, blacker than the blackest black. Something is here. With me. “Dad?” I whisper in a white puff. Because what else could it be? I reach out a finger to touch it, and then I can’t see anything else, because the darkness of it surrounds me, bleeding into everything else, even my vision. The shriek is back, screaming into my ears, bleeding into my brain. Then there’s nothing.

Waiting on Wednesday (65)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This is my choice for this week:

The Witch With No Name (The Hollows #13)
by Kim Harrison

Expected publication: September 9th 2014 by Harper Voyager

At long last... The final book in the New York Timesbestselling Hollows series by Kim Harrison!
Rachel Morgan's come a long way from the clutzy runner of Dead Witch Walking. She's faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She's crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She's lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has become something much more.

But power demands responsibility, and world-changers must always pay a price. That time is now.

To save Ivy's soul and the rest of the living vampires, to keep the demonic ever after and our own world from destruction, Rachel Morgan will risk everything.

I loved this series from Dead witch walking which I read in 2011 and I fell in love. This is my favorite series of all time, the reason I started reading Urban Fantasy and I am so sad to see it end and a little scared of what will happen in the end. I hope Rachel and Trent get their HEA.

What is your WoW choice for this week? Leave me a link in the comments.

EXCERPT:

“Where are you from?” Ah, an actual question. That means I can ask one back. “Nebraska, toward the South Dakota and Wyoming side, if that helps.” “I’ve never met anyone from there.” Michigan was a long way from home. “I usually get ‘not in Nebraska anymore’ jokes, and then I have to decide if I’m going to remind them that’s Kansas or play along.” “What do you usually do?” “Play along.” “You don’t like conflict, huh?” He sounded normal tonight, as if talking to me wasn’t an unpleasant chore anymore. That was a relief since I’d come to look forward to these moments with him so much. More, maybe, than I’d like to admit.Right. Friends. I distracted myself by considering his question. “Not if it can be avoided. I’m not what you’d call pugnacious, no. But I like to think I don’t back off important issues. What about you?” “No.” His voice was bleak and quiet. “I don’t. Even when I should.” Wow, that took a dark turn. If I could’ve jumped onto his patio without breaking an ankle or waking Sam, I’d have been down there like a shot. The distance between us seemed intolerable, and from the knot in my throat, I didn’t see how I could live another second without touching him, finding out if his hair was as soft as it looked or what he smelled like. I wanted him in a way I never had before. In high school, I had a boyfriend who played basketball, and we broke up when I left the state. It was a rational decision, and I didn’t miss him that much once I was gone. My freshman year, I went out with a lot of different guys, one date here, two dates there, but I never clicked with anyone enough to focus on them. Sometimes there were hookups with no strings, no expectations. Classes, friends and work seemed a lot more important. The intensity of this attraction was foreign and frightening, if exhilarating. I might already be backing off if I had the faintest sense that Ty was jerking me around on purpose. Wish he didn’t make me feel this way. It’d be so much simpler if I could friend-zone him. I realized I still hadn’t touched his verbal grenade. “We all have things we’d do differently in hindsight.” “What is it about you?” he asked in a wondering tone. “Huh?” “You make me…better. Calmer.” “Like a sedative?” I snickered. It was the least sexy thing a guy had ever said to me, including a junior high squeeze who said my face wasn’t actually that bad. He laughed, too, a sheepish sound. “I didn’t mean it like that. Just…I’m worried pretty much all the time that I’m dropping the ball somewhere, about to face-plant, but when I come out here and hear your voice, everything backs off like ten steps. I can breathe again.”

Dust to Dust (Experiment in Terror #9) by Karina Halle playlist

Summary:

The dramatic conclusion to the Experiment in Terror Series.

Perry Palomino and Dex Foray.

On their own, they’re uniquely brilliant. Together, they’re an unstoppable team.

Until now.

Because after everything the duo has encountered, they haven’t come across an evil quite like this. An evil that has been years in the making, an evil that will stop at nothing until they, and everyone they care for, are destroyed.

Dex and Perry’s love has survived a multitude of sins.

But can it survive the end?

Published August 11th 2014 by Metal Blonde Books

About the series (from Goodreads) :

Experiment in Terror Series is an nine-part sci-fi/fantasy/horror series that revolves around a pair of ghost hunters. Well, aspiring ghost hunters, anyway. After filming a creepy experience in her uncle’s dilapidated lighthouse, 22-year old Perry Palomino becomes a YouTube and internet star overnight. She attracts the attention of Dex Foray, a producer and cameraman for a site that specializes in various webisodes, who convinces her to be a host for a low-budget ghost hunting series. The only problem is, neither Perry or Dex are entirely “with it” — I mean, they see ghosts, after all. And when the duo isn’t wrestling with their very notion of reality, they’re grappling with a working relationship that’s deep-cut with sexual tension. As the series moves on, leading Perry and Dex to new locales and supernatural situations, their lives become more and more intertwined, where they discover that ghosts aren’t the only things that can haunt them.

I decided to only do a playlist for Dust to dust, without a review because the review would consist of only flailin, screaming and sad tears. I loved this series from the first book, Darkhouse, it had everything to make me happy. Scary and creepy things happening, love angst, ghosts, demons, asylums, hot guys ( Dex and Maximus) and a strong main character, Perry. I am sad to see it end, I am sad because of some things that happen in Dust to dust so the ending was bittersweet yet I am happy to know there will be new stories in this world, from Ada. There were so many times Karina Halle scared me to death with her words so I have to say thank you. Thank you, for creating Dex and Perry, for making their story such a compeling one, for making me flinch and cry and for keeping me in suspense.

And now, for the playlist. On this playlist are some of my favorite songs, I think they are of the right mood for this book, the lyrics match almost perfectly to me and the music is mostly haunting yet beautiful. Enjoy and tell me what you think :)

And it's raining
And the stars are falling from the sky
And the wind
And the wind I know it's cold
I've been waiting
For the day I will surely die
And it's here
And it's here for I've been told
That I'll die before I'm old
And the wind I know it's cold...

See beyond the moment
Think beyond the day
Hear the word
My voice will not be cast away
Fatalistic fortune
Ever near the end
Love goes on
But time does not return again

Across the sky
I will come for you
If you ask me to
Demystify
Your uncommon dreams
Stranger things have come true

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
In the crushes of heaven for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean delivered me

And it's over
And I'm going under
But I'm not giving up
I'm just giving in

I'm slipping underneath
So cold and so sweet

On the sea, on the sea and land over land.
Creeping and crawling like the sea over sand.
Still I follow heartlines on your hand.
And there’s fantasy, there’s fallacy, there’s tumbling stone.
Echoes of a city that’s long overgrown.
Your heart is the only place that I call home,
I cannot be returned.
You can…
You can…
I know you can…

Just keep following!
The heartlines on your hand!

Send your dreams
Where nobody hides
Give your tears
To the tide
No time
No time
There's no end
There is no goodbye
Disappear
With the night
No time
No time
No time
No time
No time

I had a way then losing it all on my own
I had a heart then but the queen has been overthrown
And I'm not sleeping now, the dark is too hard to beat
And I'm not keeping now the strength I need to push me

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone

'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home

Placem a smijeh u mojoj glavi zvoni
Ne pitaj nista, suti, samo gledaj kako gorim...
Placem a smijeh u mojoj glavi zvoni
Ne pitaj nista, suti...

Now I'm afraid of open water
But I often bathe in sin
Let's be honest, you know you shouldn't bother
'Cuz with me, it's impossible to win

Dressed to kill, you look so right
I am drunk with lust tonight
Your wounds are opening wide
And they might be just...

Quote of the week (1)

For my first week doing the quote of the week I picked one of my favorite YA reads of 2014 and my favorite read of the week : Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. Check out my review and playlist here

“What are you working on?" I ask.
"The last page." He gestures towards the table, where a pencilled sketch is being turned into inked brushstrokes. It's a drawing of us, in this café, in this moment.
I smile up at him "It's beautiful. But what comes next?"
"The best part." And he pulls me back into his arms. "The happily ever after.”

Boomerang (Boomerang #1) by Noelle August (Review and my playlist)

Summary:

Welcome to Boomerang.com, the dating site for the millennial gen with its no-fuss, no-commitments matchups, and where work is steamier than any random hook-up

Mia Galliano is an aspiring filmmaker. Ethan Vance has just played his last game as a collegiate soccer star. They’re sharp, hungry for success, and they share a secret.

Last night, Ethan and Mia met at a bar, and, well . . . one thing led to another, which led to them waking up the next morning—together. Things turned awkward in a hurry when they found themselves sharing a post hookup taxi . . . to the same place: Boomerang headquarters.

What began as a powerful connection between them is treated to a cold shower courtesy of two major complications. First, Boomerang has a strict policy against co-worker dating. And second, they’re now competitors for only one job at the end of summer.

As their internships come to an end, will they manage to keep their eyes on the future and their hands off each other, or will the pull of attraction put them right back where they started?

Published: July 8th 2014 by William Morrow Paperbacks

My review:

"We stay there, just breathing the same air for a few seconds, making a little pocket of shadow in the brightness that surrounds us.
This has to be our secret, or we could lose everything."

What a sweet and fun read. This is definetly one of my favorite New Adult books and a perfect summer read, light and enjoyable. When I first hear of this collaboration, I was thrilled. I wasnt familiar with Lorin Oberweger but I was with Veronica Rossi and I love her Under the never sky series so I was curious to see how a contemporary new adult read will turn out and I am glad. Boomerang is a  great representative of New Adult and Chick - lit genres, I read it on the beach and it made my day.
The story begins with Mia waking up in a guys bed after drinking too much the night before and she is being late to her new internship at an online dating company. It turns out the guy she met and connected with the night before, Ethan, will be working there as well and they will be competing for only one position available.

I loved them both. It is obvious from the first awkward scene that these two shared a real connection, not just physical, and are fighting it to not lose an incredible opportunity. They both needed the job for different reasons, both equally important .
They are both intelligent and creative in different ways, people, Mia pursuing her filmmaking and Ethan trying to find a way to pay his student loans while doing the internship and coaching soccer to 9 – year olds.
I loved insight into their regular lives, Mia s roomates and friends Skylar and Beth and her awesome parents and Ethan s roomate Justin and his girlfriend Isis
and his past with Allison, the girl who broke his heart. Both Mia and Ethan are amazing people, trying to fight for their future but everything was just done in a fun way, there was no heaviness in this book and I loved that, even though there were a few emotional scenes, it resolved quickly and happily.

There were some hilarious situations, with Mia and Ethan s coworkers Rhett and Cookie and some misunderstandings, some pretty steamy scenes and a few sweet ones.  The plot may not be the most original but it was done in a new way and the characters are what make this story special. The sequel will come out this year, it is called Rebound and it will be the story of Mia and Ethan s boss Adam and Ethan s ex - girlfriend Alison and I am really interested to see how that will play out since Alison is not a particularly lovable character and Adam is great.
In the end, if you need a nice summer beach reading or just want to relax with a fun book,  Boomerang is perfect for that. The characters really bring life to this story so I really enjoyed it.

"The minute you put my panties in the toaster oven, I knew you were the one."

And here is my playlist for this book, this time with some lyrics. Enjoy and tell me what you think :)

Despite the pretty dress and curls
You don't throw like other girls
You follow through

But I'll come on back
Cause I know
Though you meant to let me go
I could always be your boomerang

No light, no light in your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day
You can't choose what stays and what fades away

If you feel like you been here
So many times before
It's not the door you're using
But the way you're walking through it

Cause the heart is a beating drum
The heart is a beating drum
It takes more than you wanted before
To keep it on, it's a beating

I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one-two of us, who's counting on
That never happens
I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than this
If you want to play it like a game
Well, come on, come on, let's play
Cause I'd rather waste my life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute

It might be impractical
To seek out a new romance
We won't know the actual
If we never take the chance
I'd love to collapse with you
And ease you against this song
I think we're compatible
I see that you think I'm wrong
But anytime will do
My love
Anytime will do
No choice of words will break me from this rule

za nju, zbog nje,
ja ucinio bih sve sve u mojoj moci
cekao bi kad će mi doci
za nju zbog nje obojao bi ulice
u njene najdraze boje da stvorim sansu za nas dvoje

kada jutro sivo je nosim sretne cipele
gledam sve kroz kaleidoskop.
svijet je prepun prilika more zelja imam ja
sve bi ih ostvario sa njom.

I can see a lot of life in you
I can see a lot of bright in you
And I think the dress looks nice on you
I can see a lot of life in you

VERONICA ROSSI is the author of the New York Times Best-selling UNDER THE NEVER SKY trilogy for young adults. The books are available in more than thirty countries and the film rights have been optioned by Warner Bros.
Veronica completed undergraduate studies at UCLA and lives in Northern California with her husband and two sons. She is fond of dresses with pockets, fluffy dogs, and cheese and chocolate — but not together.
LORIN OBERWEGER began her storytelling career by captivating her first-grade class with tales of her summers on a kibbutz in Israel.
Lorin had never been to Israel.
While teacher/parent night put an end to her first experiments in fiction, she’d already caught the bug and eventually made a career of all things story.
As a long-time independent editor and story development guru, Lorin’s client successes range from small press publications to major bestselling novels. She’s an award-winning author and has also worked behind the scenes as a ghostwriter on a variety of projects. Her work has received starred Kirkus reviews and glowing mentions in The New York Times.
Oh, she did get to see a kibbutz, eventually, and found out she had it pretty much right all along.
Veronica and Lorin met at a writing workshop and just knew they were destined to create awesome things together.

The Body Electric
by Beth Revis

Expected publication: October 2014 by Scripturient Books

The future world is at peace.

Ella Shepherd has dedicated her life to using her unique gift—the ability to enter people’s dreams and memories using technology developed by her mother—to help others relive their happy memories.

But not all is at it seems.

Ella starts seeing impossible things—images of her dead father, warnings of who she cannot trust. Her government recruits her to spy on a rebel group, using her ability to experience—and influence—the memories of traitors. But the leader of the rebels claims they used to be in love—even though Ella’s never met him before in her life. Which can only mean one thing…

Someone’s altered her memory.

Ella’s gift is enough to overthrow a corrupt government or crush a growing rebel group. She is the key to stopping a war she didn’t even know was happening. But if someone else has been inside Ella’s head, she cannot trust her own memories, thoughts, or feelings.

So who can she trust?

But as they begin their senior year in France, Isla and Josh are quickly forced to confront the heartbreaking reality that happily-ever-afters aren’t always forever.

Published: August 14th 2014 by Dutton

My review:
“I am hard on myself. But isn’t it better to be honest about these things before someone else can use them against you? Before someone else can break your heart? Isn’t it better to break it yourself?”

It seems forever ago that I first read Lola and the Boy Next door, not in 2011 but I waited almost three years for this and let me tell you, it was well worth it. I am glad Stephanie Perkins took the time to edit, tweak the book and change what she think was needed because the end result is almost perfect, at least for me.

I dont really like quiet people or quiet book characters, I may be shy to people I dont know but most of the time I am incredibly loud so Isla was not my favorite character. Before finishing the book, I would probably give it a 4 star rating because of that but in the end it was just amazing, how she grew as a character and was trying to overcome her insecurities and learning to speak up. Jen from YA Romantics said that she was surprised that Isla was ordinary, with no adorable quirks. That is what made this book amazing to me. The main character is a normal girl, shy, tiny , a great student who doesnt know what she wants to do in the future, with a love of adventure books who has been in love with Josh from afar for years. She is unremarkable yet that makes her real and I most of all, love reading about characters that could be real. Josh is also an amazing character. I loved him in Anna and the French Kiss, the disinterested artist, who hides most of his intelligence, longs for his parents to pay attention to him and to spend time with him without the cameras and lonely since his friends graduated.

These two were perfect for each other, they canceled each others imperfections out and they had some pretty adorable or funny or steamy or heartbreaking scenes in this book. But those two were not my favorites from this book, it was Kurt, Isla a best friend. He stole my heart from the first sentence he utters, such a lovely soul. He is the reason every fan of this series will adore this book. And there is a surprise visit from my old favorites, Anna, Etienne, Lola and Cricket who when they appeared made me smile like an idiot.
This is without a doubt one of my favorite YA releases of 2014 and an ending to a wonderful series which is bittersweet. In conclusion, you better read this! :)

“I’m…getting there. I’m beginning to think that maybe it’s okay to be a blank canvas. Maybe it’s okay that my future is unknown. And maybe,” I say with another smile, “it’s okay to be inspired by the people who do know their future.” “It goes both ways, you know.” I link his icicle fingers through mine. “What does?” “Artists are inspired by blank canvases.” My smile grows wider.”

And here are some songs that reminded me of this book or I was listening to them while reading so they will always be connected to me. I wont post lyrics, everyone hears something different, something special to them... that is why I wont post them but mostly the whole songs are perfect for Isla and the Happily Ever After to me. Also, since there will be songs posted in Croatian on most playlists I make, at least one per playlist, I can translate them for you if you want. I hope you like them, I mostly listen to rock, different genres of metal and alternative, so be warned :)
