This side of salvation superfan contest DAY #1

Each weekday from March 31 through April 10 (nine days), Jeri Smith-Ready will post a new baseball-style "trading card" on her blog and on all her social networking sites. Each card will feature a different character from This Side of Salvation.

Why 9 days instead of 10? Because a baseball team has 9 players in its starting lineup*, and a baseball game has 9 innings. So each day of the contest will be like one "inning," adding up to an entire game.

Whoever has the most points at the end of the game will win the grand prize! There will also be 9 daily drawings, randomly chosen, so even those who don't rack up tons of points will have a chance to win something.

HOW TO PLAY
Each day:
Share that day's trading card ONCE on as many social networking sites as you can. (The first card is now up, here on the blog and on all my social networking sites!)
Fill out the entry form below (or use this link in case it doesn't appear below in your browser) with your email address and direct links to the places you've shared the card.
Do it again the next day with a new card!

Today is the first day and this is the first card:

Good luck all and wait tomorrow for the next one :)

This Love (University of Branton #1) by Nazarea Andrews

Summary:

She wants a summer job and a ride to a wedding.

He wants an assistant and a distraction from the mess his life had become.

They didn't know they needed each other.

Avery Emili needs two grand. Two grand and a plane ticket--her sister is counting on her to get to Jamaica for her wedding. But the semester is over, and tutoring college freshman and high school students has dried up until the fall.
Atticus Grimes needs help--the messy split with his wife left the twenty-eight year old professor scrambling to keep things together as the semester winds down. Now he's got a research grant he has to actually do research for and all he wants to do is drown himself in a tall bottle of bourbon.
When Avery sees his ad for an assistant, all she's thinking is a summer job. But as they spend time together, in the office and out, both of them begin to realize something is there. Something that can't happen--he's a professor and she's a student. And both of them have histories, pasts that won’t let go. Can two broken people pulled apart by expectations find a way to be whole?

My review:

A good romance read, perfect for summer. I am a fan of Nazarea Andrews, her books are really special to me, so when an opportunity to review University of Branton presented itself, I took it. This love is the first book in the series and it is a love story of a college student Avery, who was left at the altar a few years back, and Atticus, a college professor who is in the middle of a divorce because his wife cheatde on him. They meet when Avery calls for an ad Atticus s best friend left for him and sparks fly. There is a lot of chemistry between these two and at first they were resiting it but when they let go, they are great together. As always, nothing can last forever and there are problems on the horizon for the couple.

I liked the both. Avery was trying really hard to overcome her trust issues and to forget about the past and Atticus was also trying to deal with his problems with trust and women. I didnt like it when he havent told Avery the truth and that he waited instead of ran after her but I liked how these two fit together.

Author information

Nazarea Andrews is an avid reader and tends to write the stories she wants to read. She loves chocolate and coffee almost as much as she loves books, but not quite as much as she loves her kids. She lives in south Georgia with her husband, daughters, and overgrown dog.

Publication date: August 19th 2013
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18344121-the-sowing?ac=1

Summary:

Remy Alexander was born into the elite meritocracy of the Okarian Sector. From an early age, she and her friends were programmed for intellectual and physical superiority through specialized dietary regimes administered by the Okarian Agricultural Consortium. But when her older sister Tai was murdered in a brutal classroom massacre, her parents began to suspect foul play. They fled the Sector, taking their surviving daughter underground to join the nascent Resistance movement. But now, three years later, Remy’s former schoolgirl crush, Valerian Orleán, is put in charge of hunting and destroying the Resistance. As Remy and her friends race to unravel the mystery behind her sister’s murder, Vale is haunted by the memory of his friendship with Remy and is determined to find out why she disappeared. As the Resistance begins to fight back against the Sector, and Vale and Remy search for the answers to their own questions, the two are set on a collision course that could bring everyone together—or tear everything apart.
My review:

When I started reading, I had no idea that The Sowing was written by a group of authors, a mother and her daughters. Sometimes it showed but mostly the story developed good. This is a book with a lot of details, you have a lot of little things to absorb all in a little time and it can be confusing but once you get on board with the technicalities and the story, you will enjoy the ride. I am a fan of dystopia and this book has a chance to grow into a great series. It is a story with a little bit of sci fi and dystopia and we also have a murder mistery. I liked how the storyline developed, I loved the characters and their shades of grey and I liked how the authors showed us that not everything is strictly black or white, good or bad. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

Horde (Razorland #3) by Ann Aguirre

Summary:

The epic conclusion to the USA Today bestselling trilogy.

The horde is coming.

Salvation is surrounded, monsters at the gates, and this time, they're not going away. When Deuce, Fade, Stalker and Tegan set out, the odds are against them. But the odds have been stacked against Deuce from the moment she was born. She might not be a Huntress anymore, but she doesn't run. With her knives in hand and her companions at her side, she will not falter, whether fighting for her life or Fade's love.

Ahead, the battle of a lifetime awaits. Freaks are everywhere, attacking settlements, setting up scouts, perimeters, and patrols. There hasn't been a war like this in centuries, and humans have forgotten how to stand and fight. Unless Deuce can lead them.

This time, however, more than the fate of a single enclave or outpost hangs in the balance. This time, Deuce carries the banner for the survival of all humanity.

My review:

“Beautiful. And ugly. The world is always both.”

When I first picked up Enclave, the fisrt book in the trilogy, I wasnt prepared for it. I read a few reviews but I didnt know I would love it so much. So, with a heavy heart, it is time to say goodvye to yet another favorite series of mine and the characters who will always be with me.
Horde starts where Outpost ended, with our favorite group ( Deuce, Fade, Stalker and Tegan) going for help to another settlement since the horde is upon Salvation. In Soldiers pond they receive reinforcements, although not enough and when they return to Salvation, it is in ruins. That is when the real story of Horde begins, with Deuce and the others traveling from setttlement to settlement in search of people who will join their army and to try and defeat the horde. Amidst all of that there is Fade recovering from his "stay" with Freaks, Deuce missing him and trying to help him along with dealing with suddenly being in charge, Stalker who is trying to get over Deuce so they could be friends and always reflecting on how he and his gang have treated Tegan and his guilt. Then there is Tegan, always working, trying to imrove and not be a burden, helping others and tending to the wounded and always thirsting for knowledge.

“But wishes were empty thoughts, cast down a dark hole. They didn't come true unless you worked for them. I'd learned that about the world, if nothing more.”

Horde is dark, full of blood and gore, all out war, we see some dear faces die, yet there is hope in the shape of younger group of Freaks, who shocked me and certainly shocked Deuce when they spoke and didnt attack. I cried a lot while reading, one death hit me hard, yet at the end I was very happy for the rest. We see Stone and Thimble again, we see there is a way to leave in peace, we see love can really overcome the greatest obstacles and that kindness always matters, no matter how small the gesture. A perfect end for an amazing series. I appalud you, Ann Aguirre :)

“Sometimes it felt as if all happiness came at a price. You could never, ever, have perfection. Life gave you beauty so you could bear the pain.”

Blog tour: The Lover, Divine by A. Star (Excerpt + giveaway)

Lover, Divine by A. Star
(Mythos: Gods & Lovers #1)
Publication date: February 25th 2014
Genres: Adult, Mythology, Romance

Synopsis:

Born into one of the wealthiest families in Ireland, Siobhan Law has status, privilege, and a secret: The Greek gods of Olympus and their kingdom in the clouds are real, and her family acts as one of their agents on Earth.

When the beautiful immortal celeste Liam Argyros shows up claiming to have come to Earth to deal in the affairs of the divine, Siobhan finds herself unable to resist his charms. New to the game of passion and seduction, she quickly ends up in over her head, sinking deeper with every attempt Liam makes to win her over.

But Liam’s divine mission is far more complex than she ever imagined and nothing is truly as it seems. Because Liam has a secret of his own: He is Apollo, Olympian god of the Sun, and his mission will never be complete until he has claimed Siobhan’s heart forever.

Excerpt:

Apollo shot forward to catch the juice that trickled down my chin with his lips. It quickly turned into a kiss that had my toes curling and my skin flushed with heat. I supposed every kiss he gave me would have this effect.
“I want you, Siobhan Law,” Apollo said, plucking a grape from its vine and feeding it to me.
I chewed and swallowed. “I’m aware.”
“Do you know that I always get what I want?” I lifted another sugary grape toward my mouth, but he opened his in silent request and I fed it to him instead. He sucked the grape and the tips of my fingers into his mouth and took his time about letting them go. Each pull of his lips sent a jolt right between my thighs. I almost begged him not to stop.
“You didn’t answer my question, Siobhan.”
“Uh...” I took a minute to gather my wits. “Yes. I can imagine tha’ mos’ find it hard to deny you anythin’.”

He chuckled and fed me a piece of melon, and that’s how it went on. He fed me, I fed him and at every opportunity he sucked on my fingers. When he wasn’t doing that, his lips were attached to my neck. I was surprised I didn’t already have a thousand hickeys from all the neck kisses he gave me. But maybe that was one of the perks of being doted on by a god.

Publication date: March 20th 2014

The Goddess of Spring feels more like the Goddess of Bzz Thanks For Playing than the savior of humanity. And could her relationships be any more messed up?

Good times.

Sophie is convinced that things can’t get any worse than crawling back to her mother Demeter and begging for help. But she’s about to find out how very wrong she is.

It’s a race against time for Sophie to implement the big battle strategy in the YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology finale My Life From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book three of this teen fantasy romance series. Save herself; save the world. Humanity may be screwed.

Excerpt :
Of all the Prince of Darkness’ powers, his best were his bone-melting super-kisses. Which is why, when my boyfriend Kai, (formally known as Kyrillos, son of Hades, Lord of the Underworld) pushed me up against my bedroom wall with a liplock of mind whacking proportions, I didn’t do much other than grip his shoulders, try to stay in an upright position, and willingly participate.
But as right as it felt, I also knew that it was very very wrong.
“We have to talk,” I gasped as I came up for air.
“Overrated,” Kai murmured, nudging his hips up against mine. Instead of talking, he opted for Plan B, which was pretty much a new and improved version of Plan A. His hand clasped the back of my head to pull me closer.
If I pressed myself any harder against him, I’d be behind him.
Maybe that would be a good thing. Then I wouldn’t be distracted by things like the way his stupidly gorgeously-lashed eyes fixated on me, their normal espresso brown darkened and full of heat.
Kai shook his head, flinging a wayward lock of dark hair out of his eyes. That just made me want to sink my hands into his hair. And like the most pathetic Pavlovian conditioning, one of my hands snaked up to twine my fingers into the curled ends just below his ears.
His breath caught at my caress.
Kai leaned forward and gave me the most fleeting, teasing kiss, his lips brushing mine. My stomach fluttered at hummingbird speed in that split second of connection.
Kissing, touching; our chemistry was off the scale.
Sadly, so was the weight of our baggage.

Prisoner of Night and Fog (Prisoner of Night and Fog #1)
by Anne Blankman

Expected publication: April 22nd 2014 by Balzer + Bray

In 1930s Munich, danger lurks behind dark corners, and secrets are buried deep within the city. But Gretchen Müller, who grew up in the National Socialist Party under the wing of her "uncle" Dolf, has been shielded from that side of society ever since her father traded his life for Dolf's, and Gretchen is his favorite, his pet.

Uncle Dolf is none other than Adolf Hitler.

And Gretchen follows his every command.

Until she meets a fearless and handsome young Jewish reporter named Daniel Cohen. Gretchen should despise Daniel, yet she can't stop herself from listening to his story: that her father, the adored Nazi martyr, was actually murdered by an unknown comrade. She also can't help the fierce attraction brewing between them, despite everything she's been taught to believe about Jews.

As Gretchen investigates the very people she's always considered friends, she must decide where her loyalties lie. Will she choose the safety of her former life as a Nazi darling, or will she dare to dig up the truth—even if it could get her and Daniel killed?

From debut author Anne Blankman comes this harrowing and evocative story about an ordinary girl faced with the extraordinary decision to give up everything she's ever believed . . . and to trust her own heart instead.

My review:

Read my review of My date from hell first.

A satisfying end to a cute and funny series.

Ever since I met Sophie in My ex from hell, I couldnt help but love her. She is sarcastic, funny, stubborn and smart. She is also a bit of a rebel. She went on a journey to find her true self and to learn to love herself and the Persephone part of her, and she finally realized that they are one and the same. In this final book we have many things happening. Kai and Sophie have a strained relationship and that is not good since the fate of the world should be depending on their love, Felicia (Demeter) is being a pain in teh behind, she got in the fight with her best frined and she was stuck in an alternate reality where she was in Persephones body and no one remembered Sophie. There were some heartbreaking moments and some epiphanies. Some hard goodbyes and new friendships. All in all, even though I am sad to see this series end, it reached its finish line and I couldnt be happier how it all ended and I have to say I am going to miss Fee, Theo and Kai the most.

Upside Down by Lia Riley Book Blitz (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Published by: Grand Central
Publication date: August 5th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:

If You Never Get Lost, You’ll Never Be Found

Twenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying goodbye to painful memories—and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. For the next six months, she’ll pretend to be a carefree exchange student. Everything is going to plan until she meets a surly surfer with hypnotic green eyes, and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he slunk back to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defenses. He’s never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. A single semester abroad won’t  cover something this serious. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once-in-a-lifetime . . . or if there’s a plane to California with her name on it.

Excerpt

“You’re doing fine, Talia,” Bran says. “Now, I’m going to need you to release your left hand, reach a few inches and grab the next hold.”
I grit my teeth. The way he talks, you’d think I’m scaling Everest or at least Mount Kilamanjaro. Instead—
“Excuse us, we’ll be by in a tic. That’s the way, Andy, right around the lady.”
I’m the lady. Andy, a kid who doesn’t look a day over seven, scrambles past in a flurry of Spiderman shoes and gap-toothed smiles. His parents bring up the rear, beaming at their agile little monkey with obvious pride.
And they aren’t the first group to go by.
Five Swedish women, another young couple and a guy in his mid-seventies shot past me during the last quarter hour.
The top is so close I can taste it. Bran is everything encouraging, but below is a twenty-foot drop. Not enough to kill, unless I fall with some sort of suicidal intent, still, what if--
“Take my hand.” Bran eases toward me.
“Nope.”
“Talia.”
“I’m serious. No.”
This is it. I can’t do it. I can’t let go.
He won’t admit the truth while I verge on full-scale panic attack mode, but there’s no doubt I’m giving him cause to lose interest. I’m spelling out the reasons I suck in bold, capital letters.
“Take a deep breath,” he orders.
“Breath taken.”
“Another one.”
“Okay.”
“I want your hand in mine, no bullshit. You’ll be safe. I’m going to keep you safe. Trust me.”
Somehow I do it. I lace my fingers with his and he helps me gain a few more feet. My head clears the boulder and there’s the steel marker identifying the summit. Holy shit, I’m going to get there.
A last step and we’re at the top. The kid in the Spiderman shoes munches a vegemite sandwich. I want to scoop him into a big fat squeeze except his parents would likely object. Instead, I tackle hug Bran.
“I knew you’d do it.” He buries his face in my hair.
“I didn’t.”
He turns me around to see the view and hugs my waist. “Your place is here, Captain, in the sun,” he whispers. “Don’t ever forget it.”

Five Fast Facts about Lia Riley, author of UPSIDE DOWN (Off the Map #1)

1. UPSIDE DOWN is set primarily in Australia. What do you think it is about Australia that so captivates people’s imaginations? And why is Australia the perfect place for romance?
I jumped on a Qantas flight the month before my twenty-first birthday for a study-abroad trip. My expectations were simple: cross the equator, pass the International Date Line and rock out (er, study REALLY HARD) for six months. Instead, I discovered a place that has become my second home.
First and foremost, I love Australians. I mean that quite literally. I married one--the perfect souvenir! Generally speaking, Australians excel at dry wit and have one heck of an anti-authoritarian streak. To me, nothing is sexier than a sense of humor, and when the guy making the jokes has a hot accent and cheeky grin?  Life=made!
Secondly, to say that Australia’s landscape is dramatic is an epic understatement. The continent’s isolation has spawned animal, plant and human diversity that are like nowhere else on the planet. Even a quick jaunt into the wilderness yields a bone-deep sense that you are in an ancient place.
This is a country of extremes. When it’s hot, it’s bloody hot. When animals are poisonous, it means they can kill you with one bite. When there’s a storm rolling in from the Southern Ocean? Those waves are going to be huge.

So if you fall in love in such a place? Buckle up--the ride’s going to be intense.

2. What are three words describe your hero? Heroine?

The three words I’d choose for Bran are:
·         Temperamental
·         Perceptive
·         Magnetic
The three words I’d choose for Talia are:
·         Sensitive
·         Playful
·         Self-deprecating

3. Can you describe your book in five words or less?

Offbeat. Witty. Wanderlust. Heart-searching. Chemistry.

4. What did you do before writing?
Drink less! I kid, I kid. But if you ever want to see a KICKASS Michael Jackson lip-synch, slip me a bottle of tequila. I can "Man in the Mirror" you to tears. I have worked in non-profit middle management, as a legislative assistant, and barista. I'm pretty sure my mom believes I still "pour coffee."

5. What’s your dream travel destination?
I have a massive Antarctica fetish (I’ve been once. A penguin sat on my lap. Yes, it was bliss). My ultimate trip would be to South Georgia Island smack dab in the Southern Ocean. I’d also love to visit Madagascar, Iceland, Svalbard, Palau…islands are sort of my thing.

AUTHOR BIO

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult Romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling fourex with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.

A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn't mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c'mon, who doesn't love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound mighty fine.
She and her family live mostly in Northern California.
