Blog tour: Uninvited (South Hills Sidekicks #1) by Leah Spiegel and Meg Summers

Uninvited by Leah Spiegel and Meg Summers
Series: South Hills Sidekicks #1
Publication date: February 11th 2012
Genre: Humorous YA Chick-Lit

When Alley started her senior year at Upper East High in the South Hills area, it was supposed to be the usual drag of hanging out with people who spent more on one outfit than Alley did on her entire wardrobe. That was until Kirsten, a girl in their clique, suddenly goes missing and the only people who seem to care are her friends. All evidence leads to the new comer Shane, a cocky and self-pretentious person in Alley’s opinion, but the police seem uninterested so she and the rest of the girls start a little investigation of their own. But they are nowhere closer to finding Kirsten than when they started and now they had the police’s attention; just not in the way they expected. The girls have to start over and discover that maybe it wasn’t an outsider who took Kirsten, but someone within their own clique who has something to hide; a secret that just might have gotten Kirsten killed.

My review

This was a very fun read, perfect for lazy summer days. It was filled with humor, mystery and with a dash of forbidden romance, and I really love those. The characters were interesting and funny, especially Shane who was really intriguing and Val, who was so clumspy and quirky you couldnt help but like her. Alley was an ok character and the others in their little clique were nothing special. The mystery was developed amazing, their investigating and the attention they got was all interesting and even though  I figured it out before the end it was great.

AUTHOR BIO

Although we moved down to North Carolina several years ago, we’re originally from the Pittsburgh area. (That’s why a lot of our characters either live in the Burgh or reference our hometown football team, The Pittsburgh Steelers.) And yes, we even have the Southern accents to show for it now. Although Megan’s is considerable thicker, Leah still can’t understand the locals.
We are known as ‘the sisters’ among our neighborhood; when actually we’re probably really known as ‘the sisters with the Yorkies’. Our pups, Skippy Jon Jones and Captain Jack Sparrow, were given long names to compensate for their small size but not their large personalities.
If Leah’s not glued to her electronic devices, AKA her Kindle Fire and various laptops, you can find her training ‘the attack dogs’, running on the treadmill while conceiving the next great book idea with the Dave Matthews Band, Muse, Florence and the Machine, The Lumineers, and Pink (just to name a few) blaring out of her earphones.
If Megan’s not glued to her electronic devices AKA her iPad and Nook Color, you can find her teaching fourth graders, swimming marathon style at the pool, or cuddling with ‘the attack dogs’ as she watches Duck Dynasty, Gold Rush, Scandal, Person of Interest, Morning Joe, etc.
Leah graduated from Edinboro University with a BA in Art Education. Megan received her teaching degree from Edinboro University and Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Technology from Grand Canyon University.

CHARMED EXCERPT

Frankie

Sugar. I needed more of it if I was going to make it through this day. The chocolate croissant and caramel latte I had this morning wasn’t near enough to combat the massive lines, the noise, and disgruntled people that filled the DMV. Whatever in hell made me think that working at the Department of Motor Vehicles, here in Alaska, was a good idea?

Maybe it was the good pay. Maybe it was because I got weekends off.

Or maybe it was because I had a moment of temporary insanity that unfortunately coincided with me saying, “I accept,”  when I got offered this job.

Besides the fact that the lines were permanently out the door, the computer systems were temperamental at best, and my boss was a complete broom rider, my stash of chocolate and Sour Patch Kids was empty.

That meant someone was going to die today.

I glanced back up at the ninety-year-old woman whose head barely cleared the insanely high counters we stood behind and tried to hold on to my patience. “Mrs. Eldridge,” I said extremely loudly. “Like I told you last week, you have to go and get new glasses before I can renew your driver’s license.”

“I have new glasses,” she insisted.

Lord, save me now.

“You got those ten years ago. You need some from this year.” Or decade I finished silently.

She shuffled out of the line like a turtle and I took her slowness as a chance to really search beneath my station and chair for a long-lost piece of sugar. Anything. Even a stray jellybean would likely find its way into my blood stream at this point. Of course there was nothing. I briefly considered hiding beneath my desk until five o’clock. My car. I had an emergency stash in my car. I glanced at my watch. I had another hour until I was able to take a fifteen-minute break.

A pair of black pumps appeared before me and I inwardly groaned. Just what I needed—a run-in with the witch. But instead of being greeted by her condescending, screechy tone, an icy-cold red can appeared before me.

Hallelujah, praise the Lord, it was caffeine and sugar!

I snatched the Coke out of her hand and popped the top, taking a large, satisfying chug. The bubbles crowded down my throat, slightly burning, and I took another swallow.

“I love you,” I murmured to Lela, the girl who worked right beside me.

She laughed. “I know that look when I see it.”  Then she straightened and whispered. “Witch alert.”

I shot up, my head bumping into the counter on the way. I wanted to shout out in pain, but I clamped my mouth shut, not wanting to draw the attention of my boss, Satan’s assistant.

I turned back to my line, my eyes colliding with a broad chest. I looked up, and the can slid out of my hand, hitting the floor with a thud while fizzy liquid poured over my favorite boots.

I didn’t even notice.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I growled as I looked around for something sharp I could stab him with.

A thick brow arched. “So is this where you spend your days? As if the DMV isn’t a horrible enough place to visit without the poor people of Alaska having to tolerate you.”

There wasn’t enough sugar on this planet that would save him. I reached out and picked up the black phone. If I couldn’t bludgeon him to death here at my place of employment, then I could at least call the cops. I began dialing, but he reached over and cut the connection.

I slammed the phone down on his hand, which was still pressed on the hang-up button. Breath hissed between his teeth and his green eyes shot to mine. “Careful, George, you’re pissing off the wrong man.”

“My name isn’t George.”

He shrugged, pulling his hand away from the phone. “When you have a man’s name, does it really matter?”

Sweet Peril ( Sweet #2) by Wendy Higgins

Summary

Embrace Your Destiny

Anna Whitt, daughter of a guardian angel and a fallen one, promised herself she'd never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She'd been naive to make such a claim. She'd been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school's party girl. And all the while there's Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of the Duke of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: Is loving someone worth risking your life?

My review

Sweet evil was one of the best books from 2012 to me so I couldn't wait for the sequel. While Sweet peril was great, it lacked a little more action and suspense. Anna is still fighting the devil on her shoulder, Kai is still sexy as ever, only now he also fights his demon side. We see a lot more of the other Neph, like Kopano and Blake, who were great in this book, especially Kopano in that one special steamy scene *fans herself*, and we also meet a few new ones.  There were a lot more hot scenes and a lot of times you will swoon. This book prepares us for the battle I suspect will come in the final book, Sweet reckoning, and it was a great read.

Waiting on Wednesday (25)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This is my choice for this week:

Cursed by Destiny (Weird gilrs #3) by Cecy Robson

Expected publication January 7th 2014

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they’re products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…
Celia’s a girl in trouble. Her heart is bound to Aric, but he is a purebloodwere who must deny her or risk condemning his species to extinction. And that’s just her love life. She’s also been called to take down a group of demon terrorists looking to overthrow the paranormal world. (No pressure.)
In order to bring them down, Celia must ally herself to Misha, the master vampire who has made no secret of his desire for her.
And if that weren’t enough misfortune for one girl, a clairvoyant’s prediction could destroy Celia and Aric’s love for good. The only way to protect the world from unbridled supernatural terrorism is for Celia to bind herself to her destined mate. And that doesn’t appear to be Aric.

Dangerous girls by Abigail Haas release day launch

It's Spring Break of senior year. Anna, her boyfriend Tate, her best friend Elise, and a few other close friends are off to a debaucherous trip to Aruba that promises to be the time of their lives. But when Elise is found brutally murdered, Anna finds herself trapped in a country not her own, fighting against vile and contemptuous accusations. As Anna sets out to find her friend's killer; she discovers hard truths about her friendships, the slippery nature of truth, and the ache of young love. As she awaits the judge's decree, it becomes clear that everyone around her thinks she is not just guilty, but dangerous. When the truth comes out, it is more shocking than one could ever imagine...

DANGEROUS GIRLS EXCERPT:

The photo clicks up on the display projector overhead. Although everyone must have seen it a dozen times over, I still hear the gasp of shock ripple through the courtroom.

“Miss Chevalier, if you could look at the first photo…” He clicks again, making it larger this time. “Can you tell us, when was this taken?”

“Halloween,” I reply reluctantly. “Last year.”

“And that’s you in the photograph?”

“Yes.”

“With who?”

“Tate,” I say quietly, picking at the skin around my left thumbnail. I’m supposed to keep my hands folded, unmoving, but I can’t help it. Every nail is bloodied by now, scabbed and torn.

He’s still waiting, so I take a breath. “And Elise.”

“The victim.” He announces, as if they didn’t know. “And what are your costumes, here?”

“Vampire cheerleaders.”

It sounds so stupid, out loud in court, but that’s what Halloween is for, right? Slutty nurses, and zombie cats; guys with fake limbs, and girls in trashy fairytale costumes. It doesn’t mean anything, it’s all just a game. It’s not supposed to be blown up as evidence on a display screen one day, like you planned it out from the start.

“And these photographs were taken at… the Newport residence?”

I nod. “I mean, yes. We were going to a party, but we all met at Max and Chelsea’s, to get dressed, and take photos and stuff.”

We must have taken hundreds of photos that night—dressing up, and posing, and later at the party—but of course, nobody wants the rest of them. Not when they have the ones they need right there: four pictures, saying everything they want to see.

“And the blood—“

“Fake blood,” I interrupt.

“Yes.” He gives me a patronizing smile.“Whose idea was that?”

“I don’t know. We found it, online,” I explain, “The same place we got the costumes.”

“We. That’s you and Miss Warren.”

“Yes.”

She had been so excited, showing me the website. Proper horror costumes, like the kind they use for movies and music videos. Blood, and scars, and fake wounds oozing puss. We’d scrolled through the options, laughing and crying out with disgust. Alien baby.Zombie spinster. Not that we picked any of them in the end. We wanted to look hot, too. Hot, with an edge.

“And the knife, whose idea was that?”

I feel my cheeks flush. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? But that’s you holding it, isn’t it?” He clicks the photo even bigger.

“Yes. I mean, I don’t remember. There was a lot going on. It’s not mine,” I add, remembering my lawyer’s instructions not to seem sullen or withdrawn. I force a polite smile. “Someone got it from the kitchen, for the photos.”

“Somebody.” He drags the word out, sounding skeptical. “But you don’t remember who?”

“No.” My voice is small.

“And you were drinking that night.” It doesn’t sound like a question, so I don’t reply. “You drank often?”

“We all drank.” I protest. “Just some wine, or vodka, with mixers, you know? The guys had beer. AK always smoked—“

“That’s not relevant.” He interrupts me quickly. “You and Miss Warren, and Mr Dempsey. You drank together.” He clicks to the next photo, to answer his own question, and there we are: Tate pouring vodka into both our mouths.

“Yes,” I admit. I know what comes next, my lawyer’s warned me well enough. He’ll ask about the weed, and the pills. About my Mom’s Xanax, and the times Elise tried her Dad’s Percocet. About the cocaine Melanie saw Elise try over Christmas break, and the liquid X Niklas tried to feed her in the club that night. It sounds so bad, all run together like that, but there’s no way around it, save lying, and too many people saw too many things to get away with that.

I take a breath, bracing myself, but instead, the lawyer clicks again, to the next photo. “Can you tell me about the necklaces?”

I stop. “What?”

“A necklace was ripped from the victim’s neck that night, and there’s a possibility it was the one she’s wearing here, in the photograph. You have a matching item. Where did they come from?”

“I… me. I got them.” I look over at my lawyer, but he looks just as confused as I am.

“With the costumes?”

“No, this was before then.”

“When?”

“Uh, over summer, I think. Yes, summer. We were up in Northampton, there’s this jewelry store there…” I wait, still lost.

“Why did you buy them?”

“I… don’t know.” It’s a trap, I know, it has to be, but I can’t figure out why, or what for. “It was just, a gift.” I explain, “We would do that: buy two of something, so the other has one. So we matched.”

“Why this necklace in particular?”

“They were pretty.” I shrug. “They looked cute.”

“And can you describe to me the shape of these necklaces?”

My lawyer’s face changes to something like panic, but I still don’t know why, so I shrug again and answer. “It’s geometric. You know, like a—“

I stop. I can see it now. This was his plan all along, and it’s worse than we ever thought, but the word is hanging in the air waiting to be spoken.

“Like what, Miss Chevalier?” His voice gets louder, booming in the courtroom.“What was the necklace you bought for Elise?”

I close my eyes a moment.

“A pentagram.” I whisper.

“Speak clearly, Miss Chevalier.”

I say it again. Another murmur ripples through the courtroom: shock, speculation.

“Wait,” I add quickly, “It’s not like that. I didn’t mean—“

“That’s enough.” He cuts me off. “No further questions.”

“But you can’t!” I leap up. “It wasn’t like that!”

“Miss Chevalier,” the judge interrupts me. “That’s enough! Do I need to return you to custody?”

I sink back into the witness chair. He’s left the photos up on display. Elise and Tate and I, covered in fake blood. Me holding the knife to her throat. Tate’s shirt open, his arms draped around us both. Elise and me licking strawberry syrup off the blade. The close up of the pentagram necklaces.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but these only have one:

Guilty.

Splintered ( #1) by A.G. Howard

Summary

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl's pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother's mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice's tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice's mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

My review

The world that Howard created in this book is one of the most beautifully horrific worlds I ever had the pleasure of reading about. Splintered is, without a doubt, one of my favorite books of all time and it's world by far the most beautiful one. The author was inspired by Alice in Wonderland but this story is so much more and everyone should read it. Alyssa, Jeb and Morpheus are fascinating characters, each of them special and intriguing in their own way and all the creatures in this Wonderland were so well developed and described I fell in love with them all. The romance is also a part of the story, a well thought love story, and I can honestly say I dont know which love interest ton root for. This story is well written and so inspiring, I can't wait to see what new adventures wait for Alyssa in Unhinged. I recommend this book to all the dreamers out there, you will be amazed by the beauty of this book.

Dance of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death #2) by Bethany Griffin

Summary:

Bethany Griffin continues the journey of Araby Worth in Dance of the Red Death—the sequel to her teen novel Masque of the Red Death.

In Dance of the Red Death, Araby’s world is in shambles—betrayal, death, disease, and evil forces surround her. She has no one to trust. But she finds herself and discovers that she will fight for the people she loves, and for her city.

Her revenge will take place at the menacing masked ball, though it could destroy her and everyone she loves…or it could turn her into a hero.

With a nod to Edgar Allan Poe, Bethany Griffin concludes her tragic and mysterious Red Death series with a heroine that young adult readers will never forget.

My review:

I am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe so when I heard of Masque of the Red Death I had to read it and I fell in love with the characters and the way Griffin told the story. Dance of the Red Death is a little weaker than its first book but it is still a great read. I loved the action, the ambient, the way Araby slowly matures into an independent woman, I loved how devious Elliot is and I loved how Will never gave up. I cried at the end of the book, when you read it you will see what I mean. I wanted Araby to be with Elliot ever since Will betrayed her in Masque of the Red Death, I knew she could never trust him, but he is unpredictable and fun and smart and I felt like he needed her more than Will who redeems himself. In the book that is full of death on every corner, these people wont give up on the city and they do everything they could do save it. I love how the book ended, choices were made, and even though I didnt like some of them, they do make sense in the end.

Blog tour: Fifth grave past the light (Charley Davidson #5) by Darynda Jones + GIVEAWAY

Never underestimate the power of a woman

on a double espresso with a mocha latte chaser high.

—T-shirt

Charley Davidson isn’t your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper.  She’s more of a paranormal private eye/grim reaper extraordinaire.  However, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. To further complicate matters, Reyes is her main suspect in an arson case.  Charley has vowed to stay away from him until she can find out the truth…but then dead women start appearing in her apartment, one after another, each lost, confused, and terrified beyond reason.  When it becomes apparent that her own sister, Gemma, is the serial killer’s next target Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes’ help.  Arsonist or not, he’s the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return. Charley. All of her, body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay.

Charley Davidson is at it again in Fifth Grave Past the Light, the sexy, suspenseful, and laugh-out-loud funny fifth installment of the New York Times bestselling series by Darynda Jones.

My review:

After a longish wait for the 5th book in the Charley Davidson series, the day has finally come. I was fortunate enough to receive an eARC to review for this blog tour, and when I saw the invite for NetGalley I screamed. That was one of the happiest days I had in a long time. This series is a favorite of mine and I savor every page. It was no surprise to me that Fifth grave past the light is the best book in this series, and I assure you they are all amazing so it was not a small thing to write an even more fantastic book. Charlie is even more funnier, but she also gets more serious. We learn more about her abilities, we see how she deals with her new neighbour *wink* and we finally find out what happened to Garett when he was in hell. We also see a little bit more of Gemma and Quentin, who we met in the last book and who is still adorable. Then there is the famous son of Satan, Reyes. He is as hot as always, more tender and more fortcoming, and I was super happy to see the relationship between him and Charley bloom and become more serious. In this book Charley is investigating a serial killer since a bunch of terrified dead women show up in her apartment and her proces was interesting and hilarious as always. Then there was another near death incident which really made me sad for her. And, last but not least, Cookie is still the most amazing friend and a best supporting character I ever read about and her interactions with Charley are the funniest sentences I ever read. In the end, all I have to say is that Darynda Jones did and amazing job yet again and shown us that she is an fantastic author whose books will always be at the top of my list. And people, watch out for the last sentence in the book. I neraly had a stroke *wink*.

Blog tour: Taste the heat (Love and games #1) by Rachel Harris + GIVEAWAY

 Synopsis:

One sexy fire captain. One Cajun chef. One combustible kitchen…

When chef Colby Robicheaux returned home to New Orleans to save her family restaurant, the last person she expected to reconnect with was her brother’s best friend and her childhood crush. As tempting as a sugar-coated beignet, Jason is one dish she can’t afford to taste. Colby can’t wait to leave the place where her distrust of love and commitment originated and go back to Vegas.

Fire captain Jason Landry isn’t looking for love, either. Disillusioned by his past, he knows he should be focusing on finding the perfect mother for his daughter. But when he first sees Colby, all grown up and gorgeous, he can’t help but be drawn to her. And when she suggests a no-strings-attached fling, Jason can’t say no.
As their relationship grows more intense, Colby finds that Jason isn’t as easy to leave behind as she thought. Could turning up the heat on something real be worth the possibility of getting burned?

My review:

It is no secret that I love a good romance book and this one is one of the great. I was always fascinated with New Orleans so it was a real treat to read a book placed there. Now, Jason and Colby have chemistry that I rarely have seen so well described. You could actually feel it whenever they were close together. They find each other after years. She was his best friends little sister, so he never really saw her, and he was her biggest crush. After deaths of Colbys parents and a death of Jasons wife they both need to learn to let go of past and Colby also has to learn to forgive and forget although some things she can never take back. Jasons daughter is also a great character. She is cute and funny and brings a dose of humor to the story. There were a few times a laughed out loud, Taste the heat is a perfect blend of romance, chemistry and humor. Since we meet Colbys brother Cain in this book, and he intrigued me very much, I cant wait for his book.

Bio:

Rachel Harris grew up in New Orleans, where she watched soap operas with her grandmother and stayed up late sneak reading her mama’s favorite romance novels. Now a Cajun cowgirl living in Houston, she still stays up way too late reading her favorite romances, only now, she can do so openly. She firmly believes life’s problems can be solved with a hot, powdered-sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations.
When not typing furiously or flipping pages in an enthralling romance, she homeschools her two beautiful girls and watches reality television with her amazing husband. Taste The Heat is her adult romance debut. She’s the author of MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY and A TALE OF TWO CENTURIES. She loves hearing from readers! Find her at www.RachelHarrisWrites.com.

Out of breath (Breathing #3) by Rebecca Donovan

Summary

Emma leaves Weslyn and everyone in it behind to attend Stanford University, just as she always intended. A shell of her former self, she is not the same girl. She is broken, and the only way that she'll be whole again is through forgiveness. Emma must find a way to forgive herself and recognize her own worth before she can receive the love she deserves. This final installment will have listeners holding their breath until the very end.

My review

When I first read Reason to breathe, I was hooked to this story and I rooted for Emma and Evan from the start. After everything that happened to them, they deserved a happy ending, especially Emma, with all the abuse she took over the years. After Emma left Evan at the end of the second book, she tries to forget. She doesn't let anyone get too close, only he roomates get a glimpse of real her and Sara, who is the best friend I ever read about. I also liked Cole, who is Emma's friend with benefits, and I was sad for him. When Emma and Evan cross paths again, she is not the same girl she used to be and Evan can't help himself to be around her. From thereoies a series of challenges for the two, the truth about everything comes out and they have to try to forgive and forget and learn to trust others and themselfes. I am happy this series ended the way it did, withhappiness instead of sadness. Evan and Emma both deserved it.

My review

To my hero is a difficult and sad story but it is also a story about trust, friendship and love. Carly is broken after everything that happens to her, then her parents betray her and the only person there for her is Ryan. The boy she liked for years and the boy who was in love with her from 9th grade. They are people who missed a couple of chances because of misunderstandings so they decided on friendship. We see through trips in the past how it all went down. After that disasterous event, Ryan tries to help Carly to find herself again and to move on but Carly has problems trusting people, even him, after the rumors she heard about him (that werent true). This story made me cry on a few pages, but sometimes it made me smile. I am amazed how Sibarium always manages to potray such difficult stories with such ease. I cant wait for her next book.

Lyla Payne's BY REFERRAL ONLY Blog Tour

Summary

After being unceremoniously dumped freshman year because of her family’s “new money” status, Ruby Cotton has taken care not to put her heart on the line. No matter how enticing Emilie and Quinn make it look, relationships are scary and hard—while a string of flings is easy and fun. That’s what Ruby wants. Easy and fun. The only problem is, when it comes to satisfaction in the sack, most of the boys at Whitman are nothing but pretty window dressing and false advertising.
Ruby takes it upon herself to make campus life more fulfilling, creating a referral database that allows female students to rate their sexual experiences, thereby informing girls of what they’re getting into before agreeing to a date.
When her acting partner, Liam Greene, finally shows some interest, Ruby figures she won’t need to utilize the helpful gossip. He’s handsome, fun, and most importantly, not a guy she’d ever fall for hard enough to let him break her heart.
Not only that, but dating Liam gives Ruby the perfect excuse to say no to Cole Stuart.
As a star swimmer and heir to honest-to-God Scottish royalty, Cole sits at the top of Whitman’s A-list—but he’s also the lowest rated referral on Ruby’s website. The ratings make rejecting his repeated requests for a date a no-brainer, but her real reason for avoiding Cole runs deeper than a string of unsatisfied exes.
He’s gorgeous, he oozes sweetness and charm, and the electricity between them could power half of Whitman, but Ruby knows it will only last until his family or friends convince him she’s not good enough.
Before she knows it she’s falling anyway, waiting for the other shoe to drop but clinging to a tentative hope that Cole might be as different as he seems. When the secret behind his low ratings comes to light, that hope is torn apart, and Ruby wonders if she was right to give him her heart…and whether she has the strength to let him keep it.

My review

This was a nice summer book. Sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating and sometimes sad but in the end, full of love. Ruby is a tough girl and I liked her from the start. Her website was a funny idea but I saw how it could have backfired and it did. Cole is a perfect guy, hot and Scottish *swoon* but Ruby had problems in her past and wont trust him. They are two people who care for each other but past insecurities were an obstacle in their path. I liked the ending and I liked Rubys friends and Quinn. You dont have to read the first book to understand this one, but after meeting Quinn in By referral only I will definetly pick it up.

Lyla Payne Bio:

I’ve long had a love of stories. A few years ago decided to put them down on the page, and even though I have a degree in film and television, novels were the creative outlet where I found a home. I’ve published Young Adult under a different name, but when I got the idea for Broken at Love (my first New Adult title), I couldn’t wait to try something new – and I’m hooked.  In my spare time I watch a ton of tennis (no surprise, there), play a ton of tennis, and dedicate a good portion of brain power to dreaming up the next fictitious bad boy we’d all love to meet in real life.
