Tour stop: Fourth grave beneath my feet excerpt and giveaway

I am a huge fan of Darynda Jones and her writing so I am super excited about October 30th and the release of the 4th book in the Charley Davidson series. I am very happy to be one of the  stops on this blog tour so I  can share the love for this series all around :)

Summary:

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.

Now, here is the excerpt from the book and I hope you enjoy it. I did. I really missed Charley and I always loved her banters with her uncle Ubie so this was a real treat . ENJOY :D

FOURTH GRAVE BENEATH MY FEET EXCERPT

With renewed energy, I pulled back onto Academy— after hitting a
drive- through for a mocha latte— and had just started for home when
my phone rang.
“Yes?” I said, illegally talking on the phone while driving within the
city limits. Scoping for cops, I waited for Uncle Bob to stop talking to
whomever he was talking to and get back to me.
My uncle Bob, or Ubie as I most often referred to him, was a detective
for APD, and I helped him on cases from time to time. He knew I
could see the departed and used that to his advantage. Not that I could
blame him.
“Get that to her, then call the ME ay- sap.”
“Okay,” I said, “but I’m not sure what calling the medical examiner
ay- sap is going to accomplish. I’m pretty sure his name is George.”
“Oh, hey, Charley.”
“Hey, Uncle Bob. What’s up?”
“Are you driving?”
“No.”
“Have you heard anything?”
Our conversations often went like this. Uncle Bob with his random
questions. Me with my trying to come up with answers just as random.
Not that I had to try very hard. “I heard that Tiff any Gorham, a girl I
knew in grade school, still stuff s her bra. But that’s just a rumor.”
“About the case,” he said through clenched teeth. I could tell his teeth
were clenched because his words were suddenly forced. That meant he
was frustrated. Too bad I had no idea what he was talking about.
“I wasn’t aware that we had a case.”
“Oh, didn’t Cookie call you?”
“She called me a doody- head once.”
“About the case.” His teeth were totally clenched again.
“We have a case?”
But I’d lost him. He was talking to another officer. Or a detective. Or
a hooker, depending on his location and accessibility to cash. Though I
doubted he would tell a hooker to check the status of the DOA’s autopsy
report. Unless he was way kinkier than I’d ever given him credit for.
I found his calling me only to talk to other people very challenging.
“I’ll call you right back,” he said. No idea to whom.
The call disconnected as I sat at a light, wondering what guacamole
would look like if avocados were orange.
I finally shifted my attention to the dead kid in my backseat. He had
shoulder- length blond hair and bright blue eyes and looked somewhere
between fifteen and seventeen.
“You come here often?” I asked him, but my phone rang before he
could say anything. That was okay. He had a vacant stare, so I doubted
he would have answered me anyway.
“Sorry about that,” Uncle Bob said. “Do you want to discuss the
case?”
“We have a case?” I said again, perking up.
“How are you?”
He asked me that every time he called now. “Peachy. Am I the case? If
so, I can solve this puppy in about three seconds. I’m heading down San
Mateo toward Central in a cherry red Jeep Wrangler with a questionable
exhaust system.”
“Charley.”
“Hurry, before I get away!”

Tour stop: Death and the girl next door excerpt + interview with Darynda + GIVEAWAY

I am really happy to be a part of this tour since I am a big fan of Darynda. I received the arc of the book on NetGalley and I read it as soon as it was approved and I loved it. It seems that everything Darynda Jones writes is compeling and sexy and funny. I have a little excerpt from DGND for you and a interview with Darynda so I hope you enjoy it :) The book is out October 2nd.

Summary:

Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.
High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real? Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.
Now, here is the interview with the amazing Darynda Jones!

Hello Darynda, thank you so much for stopping by Between Fantasy and Reality
1.Could you please tell us in your own words about your new book Death and the Girl Next Door.
Oh, the pressure! Okay, here goes:
Death and the Girl Next Door is about sophomore Lorelei McAlister. Ten years ago,Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. Life goes on and is as normal as can be until a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school and he seems to have a specific interest in Lorelei, something that never happens. To complicate matters even further, the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Jared and Cameron instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?

2.What is your favorite scene in the book?
There is a fight scene between Jared and Cameron that I’m rather fond of. I really liked writing that scene. But right after that, there is a scene in the back of Cameron’s pickup where Jared starts to realize something is different, his world has changed. He is wounded, angry, and scared, and he thinks Lorelei has done something to him, to her utter bafflement. I really love that scene. It shows the lengths of Cameron’s animosity for Jared and the fact that both Cameron and Jared see Lorelei as something else, something
she is clueless about. It’s harsh and raw and leaves Lorelei reeling with knowledge of a world she never knew existed.

  3. How did the idea for Death and The Girl Next Door come about? Was there a specific
inspiration?
I actually wrote that manuscript years ago, long before First Grave. I have written young adult forever and wanted to get back to it. I wanted to venture into the paranormal world and the story hit me one day. I just thought, how cool would it be if Death went to high school?

4. If you had to pick three words that best describe Death and The Girl Next Door, what
would they be?
Mysterious, action-packed, sexy.

5. Tell us a bit about Lorelei, is she as sassy as Charley?
She definitely has her sassy moments, but she’s not quite as sarcastic as Charley. Then again, she has two best friends, Brooklyn and Glitch, who help her out with that.

6. Have any of your characters been inspired/based on someone you know in real life?
I do actually use people I know in real life as physical inspiration quite often. It makes it easier to envision my characters. But for most of the characters in DATGND, I just used my imagination. Still, there is a set of twins, Ashlee and Sydnee, who are based on two of my nieces.

7.    How many books are you planning in The Darklight series?
The Darklight series will be a trilogy: Death and the Girl Next Door; Death, Doom and Detention; and Death and the Girl He Loves.

8.  How did you come up with the names for the books in the Darklight series?
My YA series went through several different titles. It was first called Riley’s Switch, which is the name of the fictional town the series is set in. Then it was called Grimsight, but my editor didn’t really like it. Death and the Girl Next Door was actually the brainchild of a friend of mine’s. I absolutely loved it, presented it to my editor, and she loved it too.

Thank you so much for stopping by Darynda, I hope you will be able to visit us again.
Thank you, Lea!
I am so happy we just sold to Algoritam for Croatian-language rights to FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHTS.  I am excited that I will be making new fans in Croatia.

And, here is the excerpt. :D

I laughed to myself and headed toward the back of our favorite and pretty much only hangout. It sat a mere block from our alma mater, Riley High, and we practically lived in our corner booth. I ducked past the snack counter and into a very dark back hall. Judging by the boxes lining the narrow passage, I’d be taking my life into my hands if I risked a journey to the little senorita’s room without illumination, so I ran my hand along a
paneled wall. Where would I be if I were a light switch? Just as the tips of my fingers found the switch, a silhouette stepped out of the shadows and brushed past me. I startled with a gasp.
“Excuse me,” I said, placing a hand over my heart.
“Sorry.” The guy paused slightly before continuing on his way, and in that instant, I saw the makings of utter perfection: a long arm with shadowy curves that dipped around the fluid lines of muscle; a tall, wide shoulder; dark hair that curled playfully over an ear and led to a strong, masculine jaw. Something inside me lurched, craving a closer look at his face, but he walked by too fast and the hall was too dark for me to catch anything else. After a couple of seconds, I realized my hand had brushed against his arm. It was enough to send a vision crashing into me, like the flash of a nuclear bomb, bright and unforgiving. Tamping down my surprise— I hadn’t had a vision in a very long time— I pressed shaking fingers to my forehead to wait out the familiar storm, to see what treasures would wash ashore in the aftermath. Yet the things I saw were unreal, impossible, and certainly not of this world: A desolate landscape lay before me with scorched clouds and a roiling, violet sky. The air was stagnant and so impossibly thick, breathing it took effort. Then I heard the clanging of metal. I turned to watch in horror as a being, a boy of no more than sixteen or seventeen, fierce and somehow not quite human, struggled with a dark, monstrous beast. The boy’s arms corded as tendon and muscle strained against the weight of the sword he wielded. He slashed again and again, but the monster was fast, with razorlike talons and sharp, gleaming teeth, and the boy knew what those teeth felt like when they sank into flesh, knew the blinding pain that accompanied defeat. But he also knew the power he himself wielded, the raw strength that saturated every molecule of his body. Another herculean effort landed a thrust in the monster’s shoulder and continued through its thick chest. The monster sank under the boy’s sword with a guttural scream. The boy looked on while the beast writhed in pain, watched it grow still as the life drained out of it, and somewhere in the back of the boy’s mind, he allowed himself to register the burning of his lungs as he struggled to fill them with air. Blood trickled between his fingers, down the length of his blade, and dripped to the powdery earth beneath his feet. I followed the trail of blood up to three huge gashes across his chest. Evidently three of the monster’s claws had met their mark, laying the flesh of its enemy open. I gasped and covered my mouth with both hands as the boy spun toward me, sword at the ready. Squinting against the low sun, I could almost make out his features, but the vision evaporated before I got the chance. A heartbeat later, I was back in the dark hallway, gasping for air, one palm pressed against my temple, the other against the wall for balance. I squeezed my eyes shut, fought the memory of the vision, the fear that summoned the taste of bile in the back of my throat,  the feel of blood dripping down the boy’s arm.

My Review:

Everyone who knows me know that I am a really big fan of Darynda Jones so I was looking forward to this book for a year now. When I was approved on NetGalley for the ARC i was so excited I started jumping all around my apartement. And of course, Darynda never dissappoints. I honestly enjoyed this book, from start to finish. It was interesting, funny and hot. Lorelei is as great character as Charley from Darynda´s Charley Davidson series, Jared, although he reminds of Reyes, is a captivating love interest and an amazing character. Brooke and Glitch, Lorelei´s best friends, are so funny and loyal and one of the best parts of the book. Things just started heating up with this book and I cant wait for the sequel, Death, Doom, and Detention, which comes out in March 2013 to see how the story will play out. If you are a Darynda Jones fan, this is a must read, if you are not, read this and you will be. One of my favorites :)

Join me this weekend on the blog for tour stops on the "Death and the girl next door" and "Fourth grave beneath my feet" blog tours.

The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver summary:

Grace and Sam share a kinship so close they could be lovers or siblings. But they also share a problem. When the temperature slips towards freezing, Sam reverts to his wolf identity and must retreat into the woods to protect his pack. He worries that eventually his human side will fade away and he will be left howling alone at the lonely moon. A stirring supernatural teen romance.

Linger summary:

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.
Forever summary:

then.
When Sam met Grace, he was a wolf and she was a girl. Eventually he found a way to become a boy, and their loved moved from curious distance to the intense closeness of shared lives.

now.

That should have been the end of their story. But Grace was not meant to stay human. Now she is the wolf. And the wolves of Mercy Falls are about to be kill in one final, spectacular hunt.

forever.

Sam would do anything for Grace. But can one boy and one love really change a hostile, predatory world? The past, the present, and the future are about to collide in one pure moment - a moment of death or life, farewell or forever.

My review:

When I first raed Shiver almost two years ago, I fell in love. I was fascinated with the beautiful story, amazing characters and fantastic writing. I fell in love with Sam Roth, as did many others who read this series. I waited a long time to read Linger and Forever, mainly because the Croatian translation of Forever was delayed over an over again and since I read Shiver in croatian, I wanted the whole series in the same language. It was really worth the wait. It seems that everything that Maggie Stiefvater writes is wonderful. Her writing is just beautiful and powerful and it just warms your soul. This series has a unique story, I love the idea of wolves that change depending on the weather. The love story between Sam and Grace is just heartwarmingly beautiful and realistc. I also adore Cole and Isabel. They are both very interesting characters and even though they have this darkness inside of them, you cant help but love them. Especially Cole *sigh*. The ending to this series was perfect in my opinion. I know a lot of people were dissappointed with it but I think that it fits well with the story and it leaves you to wonder. And, the covers are just gorgeous. This is one of my favorite series and I´m sure I will re-read it many times in the next year, Sam´s poems definetly. I look forward to everything Maggie writes.

Coveted and Kept ( Coveted series) by Shawntelle Madison

Coveted summary:

SOMETIMES WHAT YOU COVET IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP.

For werewolf Natalya Stravinsky, the supernatural is nothing extraordinary. What does seem strange is that she’s stuck in her hometown of South Toms River, New Jersey, the outcast of her pack, selling antiques to finicky magical creatures. Restless and recovering from her split with gorgeous ex-boyfriend, Thorn, Nat finds comfort in an unusual place: her obsessively collected stash of holiday trinkets. But complications pile up faster than her ornaments when Thorn returns home—and the two discover that the spark between them remains intense.

Before Nat can sort out their relationship, she must face a more immediate and dangerous problem. Her pack is under attack from the savage Long Island werewolves—and Nat is their first target in a turf war. Toss in a handsome wizard vying for her affection, a therapy group for the anxious and enchanted, and the South Toms River pack leader ready to throw her to the wolves, and it’s enough to give anybody a panic attack. With the stakes as high as the full moon, Nat must summon all of her strength to save her pack and, ultimately, herself.

Kept Summary:

Fresh from defending her pack in battle, Natalya Stravinsky, a whip-smart werewolf with a lovable neurotic streak, wants a little rest and relaxation. Once an outcast, she’s now eager to rejoin the ranks of her New Jersey pack, and has even gotten a handle on her obsessive urge to hoard holiday ornaments. Yet Nat barely has time to revel in her progress before the next crisis comes howling at her door.

Nat’s father has suddenly gone missing, captured by the Russian werewolf mafia. And as Nat steps up to save her dad from a mob boss’s deadly game, two men step in to play another round for her heart: her gorgeous alpha ex-boyfriend, Thorn, and her new flame, the sweetly sensitive wizard Nick. With her life growing more harried by the minute, Nat must stay cool, calm, and collected . . . or else risk losing everything.

My Review:

This is a charming series with a likable main character and a hot love interest. I liked the story and Natalyas obsesivness with holiday ornaments, it made for a unique twist. I also like the dinamics of the books, how Natalya struggles with her family and the pack she is no longer a part of and with the therapy for her neurotics. Werewolves are really awesome in this series, nothing fancy, just a good old- fashioned changing during the full moon. Even though I liked Thorn, his treatment of Natalya wasn´t nice but then you see he really loves her and all he went through for her and you cant help but love him. I alos liked Nick, who also has his neurotics but is a really lovable character. The one I really hated in this book is Erica, Thorn´s fiancee. I will just say she is something with a big B. I hope there will be other books in this series but if not, it already has a somewhat happy ending but I want to know #SPOILER# how Thorn´s " condition" plays out.

Cursed by Jennifer L Armentrout

Summary:

Dying sucks-- and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he's a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she's more than interested. There's just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out.

However, she's willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't? But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not have been an accident at all, she's not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

My review:

Jennifer L. Armentrout has done it again. The easiness with which this woman creates fantastic stories and memorable characters really shouldn’t surprise me anymore She wrote a novel with an interesting plot, swoon worthy love interest, kick-ass heroine, a hurricane of emotions and plenty of surprises thrown our way. Again. I really look forward to any book she writes and every time she announces a new book I am so excited that I get on my friends nerves. “Cursed” is really an amazing novel and I couldn’t stop reading until I was finished. Ember and Hayden are an amazing book couple and I cant help but notice that most of my favorite fictional couples were the fruit of Jennifer´s imagination. The storyline with the “gifted” kids and a main character whose touch kills was told in a unique way it so sucks you right in and you wont be able to get away even after you finish reading. There was a lot of interesting situations, steamy scenes, surprising revelations and emotional rollacoasters.

This book cemented Jennifer L. Armentrout´s place among my top 5 favorite authors and since her every book gets even better than the previous one I think she will stay there for a very long time. For everyone who still hasn’t read any of her books ( if there even are any out there) you should. You will be introduced to amazing stories, special and fascinating characters and situations that will take your breath away.

The Opportunist (Love Me With Lies #1) by Tarryn Fisher

Summary:

Olivia Kaspen has just discovered that her ex-boyfriend, Caleb Drake, has lost his memory. With an already lousy reputation for taking advantage of situations, Olivia must decide how far she is willing to go to get Caleb back. Wrestling to keep her true identity and their sordid past under wraps, Olivia’s greatest obstacle is Caleb’s wicked, new girlfriend; Leah Smith. It is a race to the finish as these two vipers engage in a vicious tug of war to possess a man who no longer remembers them. But, soon enough Olivia must face the consequences of her lies, and in the process discover that sometimes love falls short of redemption.
My review:

This is the book that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I just cant stop thinking about it and when I read that there will be a sequel I was relieved because there may be hope yet for a happy ending. "The Opporunist" is a book filled with heartbreak, lies and love. So much love and yet we see that love is sometimes not enough and that it makes people do bad things. It is beautifully written and the characters are so different from the ones we are used to. These are very flawed people that make lousy decisions but in the end you cant but understand them. Olivia, the main character of this book, is a manipulater and a liar yet everything she does is out of love. She changes in the end but her heart is broken and I think it will never heal. I love her character and I hope one day she will finally be really happy. Ever since I read it a couple of days ago I cant stop thinking about this book. I cried so much almost through the entire book. I hope many people read this book because it is unique and wit a heartbreaking story that will leave you breathless  and stunned. "Dirty red" is the name of the sequel that comes out in December and I am dying to read it. It will be from Leah´s POV, Olivia ´s arch nemesis. I hated her character so it will be interesting to read from a perspective of a villain if you will.

Book watch: Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose #1) by Fiona Paul

Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose #1)
by Fiona Paul

Expected publication: October 30th 2012 by Philomel

Cassandra Caravello is one of Renaissance Venice’s lucky elite: with elegant gowns, sparkling jewels, her own lady’s maid, and a wealthy fiancé, she has everything a girl could desire. Yet ever since her parents’ death, Cassandra has felt trapped, alone in a city of water, where the dark and labyrinthine canals whisper of escape.

When Cass stumbles upon a murdered woman—practically in her own backyard—she’s drawn into a dangerous world of courtesans, killers, and secret societies. Soon, she finds herself falling for Falco, a mysterious artist with a mischievous grin... and a spectacular skill for trouble. Can Cassandra find the murderer, before he finds her? And will she stay true to her fiancé, or succumb to her uncontrollable feelings for Falco?

Beauty, love, romance, and mystery weave together in a stunning novel that’s as seductive and surprising as the city of Venice itself.
