The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger games ( The Hunger Games #1)

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2)

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games #3)

Summary:

The Hunger Games trilogy takes place in an unidentified future time period after the destruction of the current nations of North America, in a totalitarian nation known as "Panem". Panem consists of a hugely rich Capitol, located in what used to be the Rocky Mountains, and twelve (formerly thirteen) surrounding, poorer districts which are under the hegemony of the Capitol. The Capitol is lavishly rich and technologically futuristic, but the twelve Districts are in varying states of poverty – the trilogy's narrator and protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, lives in the poorest District 12, formerly Appalachia, where people regularly die of starvation. As punishment for a rebellion generations previous against the Capitol wherein twelve of the districts were defeated and the thirteenth purportedly destroyed, every year one boy and one girl from each of the remaining twelve districts, between the ages of twelve and eighteen, are selected by lottery and forced to participate in the "Hunger Games". The Games are a televised event where the participants, called "tributes", must fight to the death in a dangerous outdoor arena until only one remains. The winning tribute and his/her corresponding district is then rewarded handsomely with food and plenty. The purpose of the Hunger Games is to provide entertainment for the Capitol and to serve as a warning to the Districts to remind them of the Capitol's power and lack of remorse.

My review:

I honestly loved reading this series. I was a little afraid of reading it and that is the reason I havent read it until recently. Everyone was in love with this series so I feared dissapointment which is sometimes the case with very popular books. I watched the movie first and it was awesome so that finally convinced me to give this series a shot. Katniss is a real kick-ass girl and she should be an inspiration to every girl in the world. Such bravery, loyalty, love and protectivness make her one of the best female characters I ever had the pleasure of reading about. Peeta is such a kind and smart pearons and I rooted for him from the beggining even thouh I liked Gale too. First two books were so intense and beautifully written so the 3rd book was a little disappointing because storyline went a little too fast and something was lacking, that something that made the first two books special . The idea of Hunger games, no matter how appaling and gruesome, makes for an unique plot and interesting read. I hope everyone gives a chance to this one of a kind series, which will teach you the importance of family, love, courage and kindness. Prepare the tissues and embark on this amazing journey with Katniss.

Blog tour: Degrees of Wrong by Anna Scarlett

Summary:

This time, the straight-and-narrow path could be the road to ruin.

Dr. Elyse Morgan’s mission: find the cure to the HTN4 virus. The compensation, courtesy of the United Nations: a lab stocked with hi-tech goodies, limitless resources and enough chocolate to make her rear look like a cellulite farm. Bonus: she gets to live.

Rescued (kidnapped) and secreted (imprisoned) on an undersea warship, Elyse adjusts to her assumed identity as a cadet with the finesse of a toeless ballerina. Her sulfuric temper and blatant insubordination capture the unwanted attention of the ship’s captain, the gorgeous, infuriating, engaged Nicoli Marek.

Elyse would rather perform her own autopsy than become the other woman, but Nicoli—who’s as full of himself as he is of secrets—regards his impending marriage as a mere political transaction. And Elyse as fair game.

As Elyse’s suspicions about the UN’s true agenda mount along with her attraction to the relentless, chronically shirtless captain, she must choose between the murky path to everything she’s ever wanted, or the squeaky-clean path of self-sacrifice—which could mean taking the secrets of the virus with her to the grave.

Warning: Features a strong, chocolate-loving heroine who takes no prisoners on the way to saving the world from an epidemic and winning a captain’s heart.

My review:

"Degrees of wrong" is a book by the author of "Of Poseidon" Anna Banks under the name Anna Scarlett. Since I still havent read Of Poseidon, this was my first encounter with her writing and I was very pleasantly surprised. I really liked the storyline, the virus contagion and kidnapping of our main heroine Elyse to try finding the cure. We see how Anna imagined our world in 2053. A.D. and it is very unique and realistic. Elyse, who is the main character and the doctor tryng to find thecure for the virus that took out her parents, is an amazing woman. I love the funny side of her and her temper and I was crying from laughing so hard at her interactions with the Lt. Horan. The love interest, captain Nicoli Marek, is a good man, sexy and sometimes frustrating but very much in love.
All in all, "Degrees of wrong" is an interesting novel, funny and charming and I recommend it to everyone who likes a good romance book.

The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass

Summary:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My review:

I liked this book. It reminded me of Hunger games in some ways but that could be just because I read them recently. I like this idea of reality show like Selection, it makes an interesting story. America, the main character is a good character. She does not back down. I also liked Maxon. I really wish they fall in love. I think they would be perfect for each other. On the other hand, there is Aspen. I have a feeling he is lying and has a bigger agenda. I am curious to see how it will play out. I want to see more action in The Elite, that was the thing I missed most in The Selection. Rebels will spice it up, I am sure. I dont like Celeste and I hope America kicks her ass. I really dislike that tipe of people. All in all, this was an interesting and entertaining read. I look forward to The Elite.

P.S. I was reading it as part of Dystopian August on Presenting Lenore .

Dont fear the reaper read-a-long - Final Week

It is the final week of this great read-a-long. I really enjoyed re-reading this book because I am a huge fan of this series. It was really awesome reading answers from other bloggers participating and to see how they enjoyed this book.

This Week's Questions:

1. One of my favorite aspects of this book are the witty snippets at the beginning of every chapter. I especially like the t shirt quotes. My favorites are:
Jenius
Sarcasm. Only one of the services offered.
Do not disturb. Already there.
What is the funniest t-shirt or bumper sticker you have encountered? What t-shirt saying best describes your personality?
My favorites from this book were: "You know you have ADD when Look A chicken !"
“Genius has it's limitations. Insanity... not so much "
“I'd have a longer attention span if there weren't so many shiny things. "

The t-shirt saying that could describe me would be: " I stopped fighting my inner demons. We´re on the same side now."

2. Charley is constantly helping ghosts throughout the book. Would you like to be able to talk to ghosts and bring closure to their loved ones? How would you feel about all the ghosts popping up at all times day or night? Would you like to have a ghost like Mr. Wong in your house?

I think what Charley does is amazing. Who wouldnt want to help people find closure? I guess it can get irritating having all those departed around all the time but I think in the end would be worth it. So yes, I would like to be able to talk to ghosts. I dont know if having a permanent guest like Mr. Wong would be comfortable, maybe if he/ she could talk?

3. Kim reveals some rather shocking and sad details about Reyes' past. Do you agree with her decision to adhere to her promise and not intervene? Would you be willing to keep your word and let a loved one die if it was their wish?

I really dont know about this one. With my temper, I guess I would fight for the person til the end no matter the conequences.

4. In Chapter 19 Charley confronts the bad guy and finds herself in yet another situation where she gets her ass kicked. Do you like the fact that Charley consistently ends up getting her butt handed to her? What are your overall thoughts on Charley?

I think she is a kick-ass heroine although it is her ass that often gets kicked but she is always prepared to help. I like how funny she is, how kind and generous. One of the best characters I ever had the privilege to read about.

5. Chapter 20 is a big, hot, smoking chapter. We finally get some answers on Reyes. Does the revelation change your opinion of him? Do you think he can overcome his "nature" and be a good person or is Charley in big trouble?

Since I read the first 3 books I know a bit more about him and I have to say he is very frustrating and he makes big mistakes but in the end, I think he really loves Charley. I think that is all that matters.
6. Did you enjoy this book? Will you be continuing the series?

Since this is one of my favorite series i really loved re-reading it. I am really excited for October when I will finally get to read the 4th book, which I believe will be the best so far.

Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky #1) by Veronica Rossi

Summary:

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.

DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.

Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

My review:

This book was fantastic. Lately I am really getting into dystopia and I must say that Under the never sky is one of the best book in the genre to me. I am so thrilled with the world that Veronica Rossi created, everything is so easy to picture in your head, while you read it is like watching a movie in your mind. There are many characters that left a huge impact on me but mostly Perry and Roar. I love Perry´s intensity, the great care he puts into his words and I love the effect Aria has on him. Then there is Roar who is funny, charming and deeply in love with Liv, Perry´s sister. The level of his loyalty and devotion to her is astounding. I am truly looking forward to reading their story in October. I also like Aria. She is a good main character. Brave, intelligent and with a lovely voice. You could literaly hear the music in your head. I love the idea of the enhanced senses, and of the aether storms, everything was so perfectly described. I grew attached to Cinder and I hope everything works out for him sinc he´s been through too much. I must say that this is one of my favorite books and in top 5 novels I read this year. I´m really looking forward to Through the ever night.

P.S. I was reading it as part of Dystopian August on Presenting Lenore .

Dont fear the reaper read-a-long - week 3

It’s the 3rd week of the First Grave on the Right read-along! You can still sign-up and participate .Grab a copy of First Grave on the Right and start reading!
I am a little late this week again, sorry.

1. I do have a soft spot for Charley's Aunt Lilian. She is sweet and soft while somehow also being a little dirty and I find that hilarious in an aunt. Do you have any relatives dead or alive that remind you of Aunt Lillian? If not, tell me about your favorite deceased relative.

I dont have anyone remtely like Lilian. I think she is one of a kind. My favorite deceased relative is my grandpa. He died of leukemia three years ago. He was a very fun person who always supported me no matter what and I will always be grateful for that.

2. In these chapters, we get a little closer to Reyes and his secrets. Neil, the warden at the prison where Reyes is currently incarcerated - and a high school mate of Charley's - tells a story about how Reyes ended up in the Coma and something he witnessed. What do you think of the story? What does this lead you to think about Reyes?

I think I loved him a little more then and it also scared me because we could see he is immensely powerful.

3. One of the things I love most about Ubie and Charley's relationship is that Ubie aka Uncle Bob has absolute faith in our Charley. Maybe it's because Charley's been solving murder cases for ages and Ubie knows that Charley knows things. If you could pick a super power, which one would you choose? Seeing the dead? Invisibility?

I always wanted to fly, to be able to feel that kind of freedom.

4. Okay, in my opinion, there is nothing better than walking into your living room and seeing the god-like creature of your dreams standing there waiting for you. If you were in Charley's shoes, who would be standing in your living room??

Daemon Black, Bones or Johnny Depp :D

5. We get a surprise visit from Rosie's husband and we find out some information about Reyes...that he and The Big Bad are the same guy. What are your thoughts? Were you surprised about Rosie's husband or did you feel that one coming? What about Bad Reyes, had you already made the connection?

The bit about Rosies husband was unexpected and also awful. Really a tragedy. But he part about Reyes being The Big Bad, I figured that out. Sometimes our Charley cant see what is in front of her :)

Shadows (Lux 0.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Summary:

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

My review:

After reading Onyx for the first time, I had to go and read Shadows all over again. This was my second reading. I re-read Obsidian and Onyx many times but Shadows was so heartbreaking I stood clear from it. Now, some things happen in Onyx so I wanted to go look into the past again and remember all the events that we finally understand in Onyx. I really liked Dawson. He is the perfect guyand even though Daemon will always be number 1 for me, Dawson made me swoon all the time. He and Bethany were the perfect couple, so made for each other. Everything that happens to them made me cry so much. I wish things were different for them. There were some really funny moments in this book, usually with Daemon and Dee. We see how Daemon was like before his brothers "death". I love him more after reading this. Jennifer writes perfectly, as always. I only wish the story wasnt so sad but then, without this story being told, Onyx wouldnt be as perfect.

Dont fear the reaper read-a-long - week 2

It’s the 2nd week of the First Grave on the Right read-along! You can still sign-up and participate .Grab a copy of First Grave on the Right and start reading!
I am a little late this week, sorry, but better late than never, right *wink*?

1. Shiny objects and old family stories are told in this chapter, including an old nickname for our dear Charley. What was the nickname her uncle Bob gave her when she was little? Do you have an old nickname from when you were a kid? You can share it, and if it's really embarrassing we won't mind. *wink*

Her nickname was Calamity as in Calamity Jane. I think she probably well deserved that one. I can just imagine her when she was little and the image is so funny.
My nickname was Lee. But when I first came to my new elementary school when I was 12, I was among the tallest people in school so they called me Mount Everrest XD.

2. In this chapter we met someone. A really special guy named Rocket. Now, my memory is not what it used to be, and I just can't remember what makes him so special. Can you tell me what makes this particular ghost unique among all the others? And how about you? What can you do that makes you special? Anything? Jump on one foot for a really long time counts.

Rocket knows when someone dies and he writes their names on a wall. He is a really unique character and I loe him. And I really dont know what makes me special. I read really fast and I can make pretty good cocktails :)

3. Charley is really *cough* not your ordinary girl. She does something that, well, there's no way around it. She named parts of her body and the names are... oh crap, I forgot. Just my luck. *sigh* But I'm sure you guys can say what part of her body she named and what the names were. And, since we are on the matter, have you ever named a part of your body? If so, what was it and what was the name? Come on, don't be shy.

She named her boobs XD They are Will Robinson and Danger . She also named her ovaries, Scotty and Beam me up. And then she named her toes but I really cant write them now, I am laughing so hard. I never did name any of my body parts.

4. We all have our little secrets. Things we don't tell anyone, not even our bff. Char (we became close :P ) is no different, but in this chapter she shared her little (big) secret (S) with her bff. What did you think about her reaction? What would be yours?

Cookie is really an awesome friend to Charley and one of the funniest characters ever. She reacted like a real friend should, with kindness and loyalty only a best friend can provide. I really hope I would react the same way.

5. In this chapter, Char continues her heart-to-heart with her BFF and comes up with some theories about our fave badboy/possibly ghost. What do you think of it? Can it be? What do you think about him? Hot? Double chocolate hot? Super duper caramel chocolate cake with a cherry on top hot?

Since I read this book so many times, I know how it all plays out but I must say that whenever he is in near, sparks fly. One of the hottest male characters ever *fans herself*

Biting cold (Chicagoland Vampires #6) by Chloe Neill

Summary:

Turned into a vampire against her will, twenty-eight-year-old Merit found her way into the dark circle of Chicago’s vampire underground, where she learned there was more to supernaturals than met the eye—and more supernaturals than the public ever imagined. And not all the secrets she learned were for sharing—among humans or inhumans. Now Merit is on the hunt, charging across the stark American Midwest, tailing a rogue supernatural intent on stealing an ancient artifact that could unleash catastrophic evil on the world. But Merit is also the prey. An enemy of Chicagoland is hunting her, and he’ll stop at nothing to get the book for himself. No mercy allowed.

No rules apply. No lives spared. The race is on.

My review:

I am a huge fan of Chicagoland vampires series and a huge fan of Merit and Ethan. First four books in the series were perfect , 5th one was very good and this one is somewhere between perfection and very good. I was mostly irritated by Ethan and his fear of being with Merit (again) . That was the only thing I didnt like about this book but in the end he comes to his senses oh he does indeed *wink*. We finally find out what Seth Tate is, and that one truly got surprised me. Neill really blew me away with that one. Mallory is on a road to redemption, Catcher needs some space, it seems that Jonah is out of the game in the romance department and Merit is still a kick-ass heroine. Then there is Ethan. I really missed him. When he finnaly mouthed those three little words to Merit for the first time, I melted. It was about time :) You could say that in Cadogan house one era has ended and they are turning a new page. I really cant wait to see how that will turn out in House rules which comes out in February 2013.

Across the universe (Across The Universe #1) by Beth Revis

Summary:

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

My review:

Amazing story. Amazing world. Interesting characters. All that equals this fantastic book. Lately I ´ve been reading more dystopian books and that genre really captivated me. I must say that this book enchanted me from the first page and I am so glad I finally read it. It has intrigue, murder, action, passion, lies and loss. I really liked the idea of freezing people for a few centuries and the idea of living on a different planet. I was plenty angry about some racist speeches but it is relevant for the story. Out of all the characters I liked Amy and Harley the best I really cried for him, he was such an amazing person. Amy is really intelligent. That is her best atribute. All the talking anout stars and universe is really wonderful and it made me appreciate the stars above us more. Now I look every night into the sky and it will always remind me of this beautiful book.  I am hoping to read A million suns soon, it seems even better than Across the universe.

P.S. I was reading it as part of Dystopian August on Presenting Lenore .

Onyx (Lux #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Summary:

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarre connection. I’ve sworn him off even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But against all common sense, I’m falling for him. Hard.

Our relationship issues aren’t out biggest problem…

The Department of Defense is here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And when a new boy shows up a school with a secret of his own, things get complicated fast. I need to choose between my own instincts and Daemon’s.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. Daemon’s never going to stop searching until gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies.

My review:

The second book in the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout was even better than Obsidian which I thought would be impossible. But she did it. She managed to surprise me yet again, in a good way which she somehow manages to do with every book. Katy and Daemon are still amazing, I love how they interact and how their love was building up, it wasnt like in the majority of other books where love is immediate, with no build-up - just boom - and the´re in love. Katy´s and Dameon´s love builds up through series of conversasions, fights, pen poking and jelousies. And make-out sessions, lets not forget about those *wink*. Those two are one of my favorite couples and characters and I really love them. In Onyx we will meet some new characters, see some unexpected faces and developements and it is still an action packed, fantastic read. In moments it is sad, frustrating, funny, surprising, hot and is hard on the nerves. Pack that all in this book by this amazing author and you get one of the best novels of the year. It deserves 5 stars and more. Read this series and I promise you, you wont regret it.

Waiting on wednesday (3)

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This is my choice for this week:

Biting Cold (Chicagoland Vampires #6)
by Chloe Neill

Expected publication: August 7th 2012 by New American Library

Just a week!!! I cannot wait! How about you?
